For the people who have undergone a PIP assessments are the questions like this?

I know someone who went for a ESA medical and the stuff they asked was completely different to what she read online.

Yes, that is what you will be assessed on. Or that is what you should be assessed on. I dont know how how many points you will need to pass.

    Yes, but no.

Yes, those are the questions you are assessed on.

They ask you about a typical day, and will infer the answer to the above from that answer.
They may add to this observations of you as you enter and leave, as well as how you are during the interview. And they may ask specific questions about difficulties you have reported on the form.

Similarly 'went to the shops' - this may include in their view not having problems with social activity, being able to walk >200m round a shop, appropriateness of behaviour with other people, communication.

You will never ever be asked 'Can you, due to impaired mental function not reliably initiate and complete two sequential personal actions'.

If, for example, you put the washing machine on, and then unloaded it, that may qualify for succeeding at the above.

    (one of the descriptors).

You need to be specific if you have any issues at all with something, or they may infer the wrong thing.

For example, if it's the case that 'went to the shops' meant you were driven to the one shop in town that you had not been barred from due to violent outbursts, where you were wheeled round by someone, and they took care of payment because you can't work out change anymore - that is a rather different case.
It's important to during the report of your day to say every single way your disability affects that day.

This must be an average day, giving details about your worst and best days.

Either that, trusting that the assessor will 'mark' your report accordingly, missing nothing out and not adding anything that wasn't said. Or, say nothing except the briefest of replies - Yes/No/Don't know. At least that way they can't read into something that was not said.

Do you go to the shops - No
Could you go to the shops - Don't know
Do you have a pet - Yes
Is it a dog - No
You are not being helpful - No

ATOS will always try to get you to talk about yourself and in doing so you could leave yourself wide open. Should just treat it as a question and answer assessment. They are none too brilliant at using interviewing techniques in order to extract information out of you in order to incriminate yourself. The last assessment I had left the assessor completely frustrated and annoyed which then led to him making it a personal issue. The guy actually used the blank part of the report (the one used for harmful information) to make comments about me which were very personal in nature.
Obviously I complained about this and received an apology telling me that the 'nurse' had been reprimanded and that they (ATOS) had informed the DWP not to accept any part of the assessment report as it was clearly biased. That suited me as they then had no evidence to support their claim that I wasn't entitled to the benefit.

  • I read on another site that a report from the DWP that previously DLA was taking 8-10 days for terminally ill people to get a decision and its now taking 10-12 weeks for them to get PIP but the DWP say not to worry as its fast-tracked??
Fast-tracked by what? A snail? What a disgusting attitude to have towards the terminally ill.
If they are taking 5-7 months for an ordinary PIP decision then how are they going to work someone who has qualified for PIP but only get an award for 9 months (backdated to when 1st applying)? With the length of time they are taking to do assessments and make decisions, you would have to re-apply immediately.
  • Quick update folks. My MP has just contacted me to get more of my details and will be contacting the DWP on my behalf to find out whats going on. Will keep you all updated.

  • Made claim on 22nd July and ATOS have had all the forms since 6th sept. have called them on numerous occasions with no info regarding a date for an assessment other that "there's a huge backlog and we are working date order" unable to tell me what date they are up to and can't put me through to anyone who can... Now also into week 16 of ESA claim ( second time round as they cancelled the first one as my partner was still in physio rehab after suffering stroke so was unable to fill in a form) and ATOS state we're stuck in a big backlog for that too... Should we hold out any hope for hearing this year or resign ourselves to freezing or starving over the coming winter???
