i have alwaays called my MIL by her first name as OH does with mine

although i do call OH grandmother Grandma which she prefers and i like to as i dont have any GP alive
If we can put a man on the moon...how come we cant put them all there?

  • No I don't but they always sign cards to me as Mum and Dad. I'd rather they just put their first names tbh.

Their Mothers' and Fathers' Day cards I make the OH just sign them from him, and I do the same for my parents.

I call my inlaws by their first names, I have occasionally called her mum when talking to that side of the family about her but mostly call her nanny as I'm usually talking to one of her grandchildren. We have 4 female grandparents so my grandma on my side is nana 'first name' ( which we always called her as her mil was nana 'family last name'). Dh's grandma is nanny p, my parents are gran and grandad and his parents are nanny and bampy :)

All cards to them are addressed nanny and bampy, all cards to me are signed by their first names. Tbh I don't think they care what I call them :).

Edit: thinking about it I have always called dh's grandma nanny p, so it seems a bit weird I don't call his mum 'mum' I actually don't know what his Nanny's first name is lol

I never got that close to my MIL to call her anything as she died early on in our marriage. My husband called my Mum by her Christian name.

I remember my Dad calling my Grandma (Mothers Mum, Ma).

I call my FIL Dad, but only as a wind up really lol! I would never refer to him as my dad though, always DH's dad or my father in law.

I call my husbands aunt Aunty Name, but only because everyone in his family call her that, it sounds strange when I just use her first name!
Can't think of anything smart to put here...
  • MIL insists on me calling her mum and FIL dad... But I feel uncomfortable doing it so I get round it by calling her "nan (and her name) ie she is my pet dogs nan !! and FIL is "grandad (and his name) they in return call the dogs their "grandpups"!!!

We've only ever called the in-laws by their first name. I wouldn't dream of calling my in-laws "mum" and "dad" because they are not my mum and dad.

My MIL got a bit weird when I had my first baby though, she started calling ME "mum". That had to be stopped rather rapidly, no way was I going to allow her to use that (I actually found it rather creepy)!

Was she calling you mum or talking to the baby about you, eg if she was holding the baby and the baby began to cry, could she have said "mummy will be back soon"

I don't think I ever called my in laws anything - I don't think I use anybody's name very much unless I need to catch someone's attention. I would've felt very uncomfortable calling them directly by their first names though.

I have always called my OH's mother mum, and the same applies to my OH with my dad - although thinking about it, he does get confused when she calls him mum:think:

I sort of do, my own mother passed away 12 years ago so it really doesn't feel right to call anyone else mum. However, my husband is French Canadian and his family are all, well mostly, only French speaking. They also refer to each other as their title (odd family :) ) so my husband doesn't call his brother by his name he says Le Frere, his dad is Le Pere etc. So, I call my mother in law la belle-mere and father in law beau-pere.

To call them mum and dad is the done thing within their culture/ family, as I've said I would struggle in English but the different language makes it ok.
