  • I called my father-in-law Pops sometimes. But mostly I call my in-laws by their first names.

I call my mil mum in her language, it is a culture thing, anyone considerably older, regardless of related or not, is called aunt or uncle rather than their name, in fact I was married 7 years before I thought to ask what my mils actual name was. lol

My husband doesn't call my UK mum, mum as he understands it isn't our way but he still after 13 years find it hard to call her by her first name.

    No.

Just to add though when we talk to our (adult) children about their grandparents, we will say Grandma / Grandad are going on holiday etc. Do other people do that?

Yes, my nan passed away this year at 90 & my mum & aunts always referred to her as "nanny" when talking to us "kids" (I'm nearly 40 & one of the youngest, lol)

  • In person I always call them by their first names, but when we send cards or put tags on gifts that are from both of I make OH write 'to mum/dad' and then we both sign it... if I send anything that is just from me it's addressed to them by first name.

My mum always called my dad's father 'dad' which I found odd.
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!
  • No.

My parents always did that (my grandparents are all dead now), when we were all grown up.

With my son, it's complicated by the fact that he's the only grandchild, and I'm one of 4 children, so when he was learning to talk, he wouldn't fall for any of this "Granny and Grandad" rubbish, and called them "Mum and Dad", like everyone else (me, my sisters, my brother, anyway. He calls us, his actual parents, Mummy and Abba, so he's not confused. We do get some funny looks sometimes in the park or whatever, if he's calling me "Mum" and another woman "Mummy" at the same time!

My parents still call each other that to us, their children, too - my mother will ring up and say, "Dad's on his way to see you" or whatever.

My OH calls my parents by their first names, and I called his by theirs, too. As did my parents with each other's parents, too.
