very quiet day today after the kidchaos of yesterday! Barnes didn't even appear when his breakfast was served! poor kitty - exhausted from kidstime yesterday I suspect.
I was stretched out on sofa reading the last pages of 'girl with a dragon tattoo' when Barnes walked up my legs and then turned round on my chest and I experienced a 'cat massage' on my tummy!!!!!!!!!! while he purred loudly and waved a very fluffy tail in my face! oh dear - I was dying to laugh, and dying to sneeze but held both in for ten minutes till he finished! he then walked over to the other end of the sofa and settled down, while purring really loudly and looking ever so pleased with himself! is this 'cat love'?
have I said that he seems to have graduated from the top of the sofa to the sofa seat? he will even pull a cushion down to lie on! I think he feels more 'at home' now!
He is fascinated by cupboards - we have become aware that if we open a cupboard door we have to check that Barnes isn't inside before we close it! Shades of Timmy - my First Cat! he used to do that too and once spent the day in the airing cupboard!
  • My cat has fleas now  must be the Barnes effect :rotfl:

I am sure the house is still ok as I sprayed it less than a year ago, but will have to get some stuff for the cat. I last did him about 5 weeks ago and was planning on stopping. I always do this time of year I never treat him during the winter (does everyone else treat all year?). Its probably due to the mild weather but I ran out of stuff and was hoping to get away with not buying anymore till next year.

I do have a dilemma, the cat who lives down the street comes in to visit us most days. I can't treat him as don't know if he is allergic or weather his owners do it themselves, but if he is not treated as well it will never solve the problem as they will just go back and forth from each cat. I don't want to stop him coming in, he is adorable and I don't think he is allowed in his own house as he is always about outside.

We always treated for fleas all year round. I do recall 2 Christmas's back sitting next to my MIL on the sofa, who isn't a fan of cats, with Merlin on my lap, and spotting a flea in the fur on his face. Fortunately I caught it and squashed it without her noticing!

It was then I discovered that Frontline had stopped working so we switched to Advantage.

  • When we got Gizmo he used to poop in the bath. It was a habit he got before he came to live with us as he was constantly locked in the bathroom unless the previous owners kids were using him as a rugby ball. Anyhow, the girl who rescued him had managed to get him to poop in a tray but only if it was in the bath. When we got him we put a tray in the bath and after a week or so moved it to beside the bath but he'd still poop in the bath. We changed to biokat litter after we'd had him for a few weeks as it was a lot cheaper than using wood based and as soon as we changed over he stopped using the bath and started using the litter tray downstairs. Not sure if it would work for Barnes but thought I'd share.

P.S. Love reading about how Barnes is settling in

    TY lisajane.

I am being a mean 'catmummy' and trying 'aversion therapy'. I want Barnes to poop in HIS litter tray! so the shower curtain is now delicately balanced on the edge of the bath held down with the kids bath toys - (plastic dolphins which make a helluva clatter if they fall in the bath, I know Barnes wont like that, so lets see if that works!)

    Sorry!

it is still rather warm for the time of year and I think you need some frosts to kill off the fleas before you can think of stopping the spot ons. if you have visiting cats which have fleas - then if your cats are not allergic to flea bites then stop using the spot ons and rely on the house treatment. because fleas will only jump on cat to feed before retreating into carpet to lay eggs (as I understand the flea cycle). the carpet treatment then works on these.
Barnes is obviously allergic to flea bites (so am I) so I will prob play safe and treat him year round.

Frontline is primarily Fipronil - yet other treatments with this as the active ingredient still work - perhaps its something to do with the 'formulation' or the 'carrier'. I need to do some more 'research' as many cheaper treatments use Fipronil too.
  • I use advantage, I buy online as it is cheaper but will have to get some from the vets tomorrow as I need it urgently  It's my own fault I knew the weather was mild for this time of year and shouldn't have risked it

Hope Barnes is getting better with his. No one in this household is allergic (including the cat) which is good but it does mean that it takes longer to realise he has caught them, I haven't seen any yet just the 'dirt'.

Barnes isn't scratching so much - beyond the usual cat scratch. his fur is starting to grow back - and I am looking forward to seeing the Persian 'ruff'!

he isn't getting as many 'treats' while I am grooming him - am cutting those down. if grandkids can groom him and he sits there purring .................then he isn't taking me for a mug anymore!
had a really good look and I cant see fleas or flea dirt on him! hopefully, this prob now solved! and as I am so paranoid.............I have his flea treatments all mapped out for the next year!

and now big black cat without bushy tail :( Not the greatest of photos but yes that pathetic black thing on the left is his tail (which actually looks a lot better with the fur starting to grow back than when it was bald and pink after the op.)
