So not only do Benetton pay their workers in India a "pittance" of a wage, they pay their "prospective" employees (enticed by adverts in their shop window offering a full time position) £20 for an 8 hour day...while they "assess" them, then have the brass neck to say..."In the current financial climate they can't even offer you a job"... wonder are they saving their pennies to compensate some of the families of the 900 workers who lost their lives in Bangladesh?
I though the days of ripping off people looking for work were long gone and it only happened in some "Third World Countries"...seems not, unfortunately it wasn't through a job centre...but a cunning advert (for a position which obviously doesn't exist) in their shop window.
They should be ashamed, but if Bangladesh doesn't worry them...I can't see the plight of a single girl from the UK meaning much to them either.

I'm assuming that you were taken on for training at say, a standard wage for training time, yet they decided not to take you on permanently?0

is the standard Benetton wage for training, £20 for an 8hr day?
it wasn't me BTW...don't think they'd want someone my age working there...lolNo two ways about this one: Anything Free is not a Basic Right..it had to be earned...by someone, somewhere0 -
For a 16 year old the wage would only be around £29 for 8 hour day

It's like shooting nerds in a barrel0 -
Until people collectively do something about abuses like this, by boycotting the Benetton shops, (or whoever is perpetrating the abuse) then nothing will change. Society needs to start to act coherently and together to target things like this, Government can't be expected to do everything.0

by that reckoning then an adult should get about £50...but what rights do you actually have in relation to this type of thing...
advert in window offering full time post
interviewed and asked to come for a trial
work your socks off for 8 hours (or more)
get reached £20 and to be told, there really aren't any jobs
slave labour...rip off merchants....I stand by that statement
I suppose my question should be...are you legally entitled to proper payment for a trial/assessment...especially when you are being told things like "if it's quiet, just re arrange stock, tidy things up etc"...basically perform as a normal full time member of staff...No two ways about this one: Anything Free is not a Basic Right..it had to be earned...by someone, somewhere0 -
Is this just one day or is the trial multiple days?
Is it possible this person was just not good enough and they were trying to be polite by saying there were no jobs?
If you hate how they treat bangladeshian workers so much... And you must becase you are slating them about it publicly... Why on Earth would you want your friend/relative working there anyway?
Or do you only care about sweatshop workers when it suits you?Hi. I'm a Board Guide on the Gaming, Consumer Rights, Ebay and Praise/Vent boards. Chickabiddybex wrote: »Is this just one day or is the trial multiple days? one day...why? do they con people for a week?
I think the point Chickabiddybex was trying to make is that if it was more than one day it's less likely they could argue it's a trial.
OP, I would recommend your friend takes the advice from this site here to ascertain whether they are allowed to do this or not.If you think you are not being paid the national minimum wage or want to check whether you are entitled to the national minimum wage, you should contact the Pay and Work Rights helpline on 0800 917 2368 or should go to an experienced adviser, for example, a Citizens Advice Bureau0 -
How the hell was Chick's behaviour troll-like? He/she made some pertinent points about your original post and then you just twisted them. The fact of the matter is, you did mention the plight of the Bangladeshi workers in your OP, then went on to say this -
2If you hate how they treat bangladeshian workers so much...did I say I hate that? Ridiculous. I can only assume you are, in fact, the troll.

Anyway...post constructively ... or post off.
Seriously, OP, there's no need to call other people trolls just because they disagree with you.
