This does sound like very sharp practice. OP, I hope you'll update us with any further information you get.

I find it hard to believe any sane company would want to employ someone for one day, just to get cheap labour, considering the risk that involves to the company. I suspect this was a one off by a loony manager, I don't think the head office would be too impressed. I think it's poor, but I don't think one days work is going to be a killer, but the ethics are highly questionable.

Remember the ubiquitous duffel bags? I found some unused ones a couple of years ago, sold them for a surprising amount on ebay.

So not only do Benetton pay their workers in India a "pittance" of a wage

And I'm betting they use the same "factories" to make their clothes as most other UK high street brands...!

In fact, I bet there are far worse culprits out there!

£20 for a trial is a bit rubbish, but I know others who have had an UNPAID trial day. It's often not exactly free labour, as the person being trained needs supervising, showing the ropes etc... so they may have had to have an extra member of staff in.

As for no job at the end of it, now that IS weird!

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

except there were fewer staff in....looked like a staff shortage..."trial" had been delayed until a major stock delivery had arrived and "trainee" was left unsupervised to sort delivery, sort stock range, price stock, put on display and arrange and merchandise other stock and displays and was left in department to work on her own....she is already experienced in retail and basically wanted to work in a job with more hours.....have since discovered on other business forums that what they have done may be illegal and flouting the minimum wage etc etc....theres actually a few "legal" types kindly helping at the moment as well....so if and when there's updates.....I'll post back.
