Is she going far from home. We've been packing today and will finish off tomorrow for early morning departure on Sunday. I can't believe how much stuff we have to take.

I went food shopping again tonight! Bought DD some grated cheeses for making pizza to save her grating!!!

In Poundstretcher last night I got:
    3 underbed storage boxes
    set of 3 baking trays
3 dryers/airers to go over the radiator (in a set, she'll only need one so I'll keep the other 2)
    a washing up bowl
    washing up brush

all for £18. Lots more to do yet, this weekend will be the big shop then she starts packing for moving in next weekend.

Hi - today I picked up from Argos:
    2 x fitted sheets @ £5.99 ea
    1 x mattress protector @ £5.99
Set of 4 blue wine glasses £4.99 from the Clearance section

She'll be taking one of our spare duvets + pillows plus I've told her she can take whatever duvet covers & pillow cases she wants from our collection. She can also have the spare highbball & juice glasses we have (they came in sets of 8 but our cupboards can only fit 6). She's already decided to take her fleecy blanket and the cushions from her bed because they'll remind her of home. Off to Sainsbugs Superstore tomorrow to get the rest of the kitchen stuff in their Student section! I'm hoping to do this all for under £100!

Hi....Finding all these posts really interesting as this time next year it will be my eldest DD off to university.
Wondering though, has anyone any experience of getting a child to uni by train? Bearing in mind the amount of stuff they take with them, how on earth am I supposed to get her there when I don't drive?:)

I really don't know how you do it by train but I guess you just have to limit.

    Essentials I am taking are:

    1 large suitcase with clothes
    1 smaller suitcase with shoes
    1 largish suitcase with electrical/min cooking equip/bedding
    1 case of make up
    Duvet/Pillows

Extras I am taking as we have car and are arriving on Sunday (else I would have supermarket shopped on arrival day)

    Two bags of food
    1 bag of toiletries
    Sick bowl
    Iron
    Drinks
    Clothes airer

The uni does for Foreign students provide a bedding pack for £25 which includes duvet, pillow and 1 set of bedding.

You can always buy on line and have delivery direct to halls for food shopping (and other stuff) if you wish.

Oh two friends told me to add Door wedge to packing list!!!

I saved this link some time ago in case I ever needed it as I don't drive.
It might help with some of your DD's stuff. I am pretty sure it was recommended by someone on MSE.

  • It took me an hour and a half to pack the car with bits crammed into every corner to get my DD off to start uni today. Much easier unpacking though, because the lovely uni students from higher years helped her unpack the car. They couldn't have been more friendly and helpful.

Next Thursday I have to do it all again when our son goes back to uni but at least he has some stuff already at his house.

One of my friends came by train with her parents (none of them drive), they only really took clothes and bits from the house like their spare plates on the train and then just picked up some cheap bedding etc when they got up here.

Sounds like everyone has had a day shopping!

I have been very MSE and managed to get a full length mirror from a FREEBIES site on FBook for DD to take, in fact I got offered two so have now got one for home as well. Both within 3 miles of home so very little petrol too.

Got various bits of food in £land including some tinned fruit, so at least when she runs out of money she can have some of her 5 a day :D. I am going to get some plastic trays to fit under her bed so that I can fill them with non perishables eg tinned toms, pasta, noodles to tide her over when things are tough.

Have you seen the room, it may have under bed drawers. I thought the exact same, but glad I didn't invest in these plastic trays as my lad has drawers under his bed.

How is everyone coping with waving their offspring off to Uni? Mine went on Friday, and I must admit, he seemed so confident and happy (and has since) it has kind of buoyed me along, but the house seems so empty without him here
The opposite of what you know...is also true
