I've put together a little box with paracetamol, lemsips, plasters & antiseptic cream in.
Add in dioralyte, ibuprofen, burn cream and a box of anti-histamines! Also cough linctus, a thermometer and a hot water bottle. All got used by DD. The thermometer was invaluable when she got very ill and her flat mates took her to hospital. They at least had evidence of a high temperature and got very worried she had meningitis because she also had cold hands and feet. False alarm but shows these things do get used.

DD appreciated stuff like the washing liquid and fabric conditioner used at home as the smell made her think of home! A couple of sets of bedding and an extra duvet for exam time when things were tough and time was short. Couple of sets of towels including bath sheets etc. so a spare was always available.

We also provided an additional emergency use credit card and a little emergency cash "just in case". For the car RAC membership, fluorescent jacket, torch, and a phone card.

in addition a list of phone numbers typed and laminated was put on The wall in her room ( by her ) so that if she was unwell etc. her flat mates could could contact us.

Although our children feel grown up, they do appreciate bits of help which are discreetly provided!

    Hi All

My DD and I have been practicing economical cooking today - homemade pizza and salad - really cheap and sooooo tasty, much nicer than shop bought. It is not something I have done before because I am not that keen on pizza, but thought it would be good for DD to save money and I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed it.

What have you lot been up to?

DD had job transferr confirmed so has a min. 4hr Sat job. I've told her that is enough hours to see how her work load goes but more hours will be offered whenever she wants.

Aside from that we baked cakes last night!!!:rotfl:

Anybody waved their child off yet?

I have just under 2 weeks!!! Buying extra every food shop with things like olive oil, sugar, pasta, pesto, cereal.

Also bought packet mix for pancakes (her favourite) and going to show her how to make this weekend! Think we need to go over basics as we had a pizza on a black polystrene tray and she said "oh I don't need to put on tray as it says remove packaging and place on oven shelf". I had to point out that the packaging was not just the cling film but also the tray that would melt in the oven! Perhaps I need to remind her about foil in microwave!

Just googled and asthma is not an exempted condition so she would have to pay.

It seems if she registers with GP in England she will have to pay for inhalers, if she remains registered her in Wales she won't.

Her Uni year is short (ends early May 2014) so not sure what to do. Does she have to register with GP at Uni?

When my eldest went away to Uni he registered with a GP there because that is what they were told to do - never used. Transferred back to "home" GP at end of course.

Son number 2 said if he was ever ill enough to see a GP he'd rather come home, so he stayed registered here. Never needed, but saved the hassle of transferring back.

With DS3 (current student) we decided not to transfer, and towards the end of his first year he was rushed to A+E - he was still ill when discharged, so we brought him home to recover and were glad he hadn't transferred GPs, as he received follow up care from them.

We decided on the basis that overall they are at home more than away, routine GP visits can be done when they are home, and in an emergency they will be treated wherever they are.

DD goes moves into Halls on 22nd December, so not long now either. I too have been buying a few bits whenever I go shopping.

Great idea on buying pancakes mix, will look at those for DD too.

Ahh melted plastic tray would not have been that tasty!!

Got to do the gym run for DD2 now - bain of my life!

    Talk later.

Anyone done the Santander railcard deal?

Yes. Card takes about a week to arrive, is valid for 4 years and you can close the bank account after opening and keep the railcard!
