Will DD need a printer for her laptop or do they use uni ones and pay?

Our son has a printer and found it invaluable. A kodak - the ink is really cheap. It photocopies & scans too. It's WIFI enabled.

First day. Everyone moved in. In a hall of 7, we had 4 toasters and 3 sandwich makers.

And 7 irons. None of which had even been opened after the first year.

My biggest suggestions. Chocolate brownies or a cake. Go around giving pieces out and makes the how situation more relaxed and helps you start off a get to know you session.

In son's flat of lads he was the only one who brought a kettle and a toaster. They were still in use when he was heading back so they got left. He just bought another value kettle & toaster for his second year..

Folks buy your kids some beer - lots of beeeeer - to share with their flat mates on their first day. They will be eternally grateful lol!

With asthma they may be free here. My DS gets all his free due to an on going health condition. She'll need to get an exemption card if that is the case. You can apply for them on the NHS website.

Just googled and asthma is not an exempted condition so she would have to pay.

It seems if she registers with GP in England she will have to pay for inhalers, if she remains registered her in Wales she won't.

Her Uni year is short (ends early May 2014) so not sure what to do. Does she have to register with GP at Uni?

Difficult one, it's really a personal choice. I think you're *supposed to* register at a GP near the university, but I never did when I went to uni as a mature student less than 10 years ago.

It probably depends on the severity of her condition and the availability of walk in centres where she is going to uni.

Also, what would she do for medical care in the holidays or if she returns home after uni? Does your local GP usually have spaces or will she struggle to re-register after uni?

  • Loving this thread, my son is in halls with 4 other boys, gawd knows who will be cleaning the shared bathroom......
Some additional odd things on our list are hangers (though in my heart I know he'll not use them), cheap toilet brush, nice toilet paper (he'll be on the cheap stuff soon enough!), paracetamol, colander, cheese grater, air freshener for loo, pizza cutter, round tray (cos a pizza doesn't fit on a dinner plate!) cling film/foil, extra blanket/fleece (some uni rooms can get cold in winter), a plastic bin/bucket for when he feels ill ;) & a decent alarm clock :D
Also spare extension cables/adapters for all his 'kit'.

He has never put a duvet cover on a duvet himself or used a washing machine (yup, totally spoilt) & has banned me from visiting for the first month argh............. It only seems five minutes since I was worried about him starting school - but he did managed to get his plimsolls on himself, so all will be well x

  • You might be pleasantly surprised Everhopeful about the cleaning. My two boys were at the same uni until recently but both living in separate houses. DS1 lived with mostly girls and DS2 lived with all boys. The cleanest house was definitely the one with all boys.

More shopping today. Ikea had tea towels for 20p each and mugs reduced to 50p (girly hearts no boys ones). Also set of 18 piece set in either white or green for £5 (dinner/side & bowls).

Sounds like everyone has had a day shopping!

I have been very MSE and managed to get a full length mirror from a FREEBIES site on FBook for DD to take, in fact I got offered two so have now got one for home as well. Both within 3 miles of home so very little petrol too.

Got various bits of food in £land including some tinned fruit, so at least when she runs out of money she can have some of her 5 a day :D. I am going to get some plastic trays to fit under her bed so that I can fill them with non perishables eg tinned toms, pasta, noodles to tide her over when things are tough.
