Can you wear black to a wedding?

I'm fat.
I can't wear light colours, a) they don't suit me because of skin tone/hair colour etc, b) they make me look even fatter.
I suit deep burgundy, navy, black etc.
I need to buy something to wear to a wedding in a couple of months. Even with the best will in the world, I'm not going to lose enough weight in that time to make that much of a difference.
All the 'occasion' stuff I've looked at online seems to be fitted or light coloured. But I've seen some black dresses that might do at a push.
Where do fat folk buy fancy clothes from? I live in jeans and t-shirts and haven't bought anything to go out in since 2007! I kid you not. :rotfl:
I suppose black trousers are out of the question?
What makes it worse is I know a lot of the other female guests are very well turned out on a normal day so within this particular circle, I'm probably going to stick out like a sore thumb at the wedding.
Oh well, there's always vodka, I'll just mingle with the barman. :rotfl:
So...black or not?

Don't wear black trousers, but a black dress is fine these days as long as you're not the mother of the groom or one of his exes!
You jazz it up with really bright accessories, and maybe a snazzy bright jacket or shrug. Fuschia pink or bright orange look great with black.
Have you seen a black dress you like?0 -
Well I can...
But I suppose this is some sort of woman's etiquette thing along with not wearing the same outfit as someone else and never showing up to a formal event in the same pair of shoes as last time or be damned?
How about one of those black women's suit things (yes, I know all the terminology!) with a light colour underneath? You say the wedding is in a couple of months so it might be cool enough to keep it buttoned up?
How important is this wedding? Is it really important you attend or could we be in "fake a toothache" territory?0 -
I'd wear a black dress for a wedding (and have done, although it was christmas eve so the whole occasion was more wintry). Personally I wouldn't go with black trousers - but I think that's because in my mind black trousers are what you wear for work.
I'd wear trousers of a different colour, or a black dress, but not black trousers.0 -
Go for burgundy or navy, black is a bit obvious. Plum is the new colour for Autumn and Winter (apparently) so you might find something in that colour in Tesco/Asda/Primark/Matalan which won't cost a fortune..................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Definitely wear black, especially if you are comfortable in it but you can always brighten it up with a wrap/ pashmina, shoes or bag - even if those are still in a darker colour that you feel comfortable in. The only wedding faux pas you can make as a guest is if you go in pure white/ ivory ( in my opinion)

Traditionally, black was a colour for mourning and funerals, so wearing it to a wedding was a way of letting the couple know how you felt about them getting married. Women weren't supposed to wear red either, it was apparently a way of signalling that you were the groom's secret mistress!
The only real colour rule now is that you shouldn't wear white, only the bride is allowed a white dress at a wedding. Even that gets stretched a bit now though and its fine to wear patterned dresses with a lot of white in and so on.
It is all a bit weird, I'll grant you that.0 -

Like is too strong a term.
When you're fat, you go more with 'that'll do'. :rotfl:Herman - MP for all!0 -

There are loads of occasion clothes on this website that are darker colours. When I clicked on their website they had a 10% off offer too

I disagree ~ of course you can wear black trousers to a wedding ~ just with a smart top in a colour which suits you, and teamed with classy accessories.0
