My car judders

I have a 1998 Ford Fiesta 1.3 Endura-E engine... And it's silver!

Anyway, I drove for about 3 hours down the motorway yesterday (in a horrendous storm!) and it was fine. Today I was driving around town and I stalled about 3 times which was weird because I hardly ever stall let alone more than once per journey.
Then I went on the motorway and it felt a bit more vibratey than usual. I thought it was a rough road surface at first. Then the vibrating got worse as the journey went on. Then instead of vibrating it was juddering. It is at its worst at about 50-60mph but it's better above or below those speeds. But now it has started to judder at low speeds too. Basically it is getting worse.

Does anyone know what it could be and what I should check for first?

Given the stalling "issue", i'd put my money on the idle control valve......

50-60 is going to be the lower end of 5th gear, effectively idle speed.

Yes, it the juddering dependant on engine speed or road speed?
I.e does it do it at 50-60mph in both 4th and 5th, or is it only when the engine is at certain RPM in all gears?

It's important to isolate it being engine related (engine speed dependent) from transmission/suspension/driveshaft related (road speed dependent)

I'm not sure I'll be able to figure that out. I don't have a rev counter. I'll give it a shot next time I'm able get to that speed though.

Does it judder at different (lower) speeds in different (lower) gears. That should be pretty easy to determine.

  • I gave it a go this morning but I was limited because I had to go to work and didn't get much chance to test it. I am almost sure it judders at lower ends of the gears.

However... I went 30 in 5th and there was no judder at all. So the lowest possible speeds in each gear aren't a problem. Say if you ranked speeds 1-10 it's only a problem at speeds 2-6. I hope that makes sense.
