Scammed over a scooter on ebay

Looking at the original listing, complete with the "You're in safe hands when you shop on ebay/ ebay buyer protection" box, I'd probably assume that the sale was covered by ebay protection, as did the OP. And I speak as an old and grizzled buyer who has been glad of that protection several times in the past: if I think there's any possibility that the purchase I'm making has any significant risk attached, that's the box I look for on the listing page.
Seems it's not as simple as that. Frankly that looks like misrepresentation by ebay if the purchase doesn't actually qualify.0 -
Buying a vehicle without viewing it first is silly at best.
Dropping 600 quid to someone who's got negative feedback should have started the cogs turning. Not sure why you're going on about your university qualifications like they mean you've not acted like a total numpty in this situation.
What sort of delivery company takes payment from the recipient?
I like to try and help the best i can rather than just pick holes, so from someone who has a full motorbike licence and previously used to sell cars:
I don't know how far eBay/Paypal can help (awful, terrible companies) with regards buyer protection etc, but if your Paypal was linked to a credit card you may have some sort of protection off them?
As far as the vehicle is concerned, rewiring is cheap and the other stuff can be solved with screws and tape. If it's something for just getting about on, you may be better off just biting the bullet and spending another couple of hundred on it to get it right. Even spending up to £1000 is reasonable for a scooter anyway.

Unfortunately some of the people posting latterly will not be able to see how my university education (which I regard as being totally irrelevant to this situation) came into the discussion. Essentially I mentioned that I was pushed for time because I had to go back to university soon in the original post, as that combined with my immobility was a motivating factor in the purchase (pretty innocuous huh?)
The first response post, which has now been deleted, and was essentially a torrent of abuse, opened with the line "Dave do you think you should be wasting time attending University, if you are not going to adopt some common sense to your life"
That's how my university education came into this. I set the respondent straight in the sense that it most certainly was not a waste of time (a very insulting suggestion) because I've already been successful there. However I would have preferred if the discussion had not gone in that direction at all.
I won't be posting any more questions on this forum. As I mentioned before, I post on quite a lot of forums on the internet but I've never seen anything like this before. Not even close.0 -
I do note that some people did try to be helpful and I thank them for their help.0

It wasn't a torrent of abuse, it simply said that what you done was stupid, you took it personally that I said you were stupid (which you probably are irresepctive of graduating) anyways 1 week later and you still haven't got this resolved, only backs up what people have said, you are simply attention seeking.0 -

To be honest this is pretty much 'i'm already really smart, are you even smart enough to have passed high-school'? This was in response to someone stating that educated people often lack common sense.FYI I'm already qualified to masters degree level and am now retraining in a different subject. Have you even got any GSCEs/O-levels?
People who do idiotic things because they're green as grass in the real world are fine, but when they try to put down those that would have never been as stupid by suggesting they're less educated it tends to get people's backs up.
I know YOU didn't bring up education, but you then went on to put others down so you can't really expect any sympathy.
Man up, get the bike fixed or sell it on for parts to recoup some money and next time don't be so naive, especially where money is concerned.

As a recent eBay scooter seller (I got positive FB too), can I say I too am surprised you did not ask the seller an questions about it, as his description was lamentable.
In the OP's position, you need to get the bike professionally checked out - did the V5C have red front page? And did the VIN & Engine number match? When did the MoT last expire? Assuming nothing adverse, then take it to a dealer and get it working. The cost for doing so is what you will pursue the seller for if they choose not to reimburse you.
You must raise a Small Claim at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, nowhere else is competent to do so - however you beed to be sure the seller has provided a legitimate address otherwise you are chasing shadows.
Your purchase has been somewhat traumatic, and a steep learning curve but it shouldn't cost you too much to get up and running providing nothing major is found. Visit a forum where this bike is the enthusiasts subject matter - you may still have got yourself a bargain!0 -
I'm surprised that no-one has mentioned this yet and the OP didn't say but, have you tried contacting the seller? Their attitude towards the situation would give a good insight into their intentions/how hard you would have to fight to get your money back.
The seller left positive FB on the 6th August, seems unlikely if they thought they'd got an issue with the deal?Toyota - 'Always a better way', avoid buying Toyota.0
