As for your cyclist friend? Darwin in action. Ask him if his family want flowers or a donation to charity.
Runners can be even worse. Black clothes are apparently de rigeur, and whereas bicycles have reflective bits (usually), runners don't. I picked up one pair trotting along side-by-side in the middle of the road only because there was a tiny bit on their trainers that reflected my car's headlights. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -
Aaargh! I've been reading PN's stuff about her new phone and it's absolutely maddening. There's so little competition over here that you simply can't game the system because nobody competes.
If you mention to an Aussie that you're jumping through any hoops at all to get a bargain they look at you like you're certifiable. If you get money off from your regular shop it's ok. If you go round the corner to get a deal you're Unaustralian. It does my head in about living here.0 -

I remember seeing a programme that was about how to be happier and the number one thing was to take up dancing - music, making a fool of yourself and therefore laughing, mixing with people, having to think of the steps and not about your problems meant it was a clear winner. I'm very much in favour!

So what do I do? Cable him a hundred quid, and wish him well? Poor bloke, he must be really desperate.
And before anyone mentions it, this is not a scam.[/QUOTE]
I'd be tempted to ask a few questions too to verify if it is him. If you are sure, then yes, always give to people who have less than you.PasturesNew wrote: »
10 days is phenomenal. Since I've been working I've usually only had Xmas Day/Boxing Day off, same with sibling, so we've generally just had Xmas Day, then Boxing Day, at the parents'. I've never bothered getting much in at all as it's just been 2 days off work, with Xmas Day and Boxing Day at mum's, no chance to do anything 'for Xmas' at mine
We'd turn up each of the two days, not 'stay there'
We will end up with a two week shut down because of Christmas Day and New Year falling mid week. I'm looking forward to the break, but on the other hand I have to pay 20 drivers to sit around and no money coming in. December is never a great month.0 -

I've heard the phrase, "If they need to ask, you need to give."
But an email from a taxi driver you last heard from over 5 years ago? If the situations were reversed, Britain was in economic melt down you were out of work and penniless and needed money for your family, how far down your list of possible helpers would this guy be?I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Does it come out of their annual leave?I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. They just introduced Xmas closedown at our place. You get 6.5 days off for taking 5 days paid holiday so not too bad a deal.
You don't have to take it if you can demonstrate a 'business need' for you to be there (e.g. you're an accountant as our financial year end is Dec 31).
Personally I think it's a pretty good idea. I can take the best part of a fortnight out of the office without worrying that there's going to be a ton of work piling up.0 -

It was built/tacked onto the end of a terrace about 10 years ago, the room layout is a little bizarre ... I don't think the garden ever gets an ounce of sunlight... but it does get me on the books of the agent and I get to drive down a road I've never driven down before. It's about 3 miles from where I am now.
You never know, you may like it and they may take an offer. I'm nosey, so I'd go for that reason;)

Love that! Most mornings I turn onto the main road and see three levels of cyclists, a chap with a light on his helmet, one on a waistband and then on the bike, one with standard but good bike lights and one with none:eek: How he's still alive I don't know.Does it come out of their annual leave?
The three days between Xmas and New Year does, the rest no. Because all of my customers will not think it worth opening for two days before Xmas and the two days after New Year, we slumber. I may pick up the odd job, but that's at best. Drivers get really bored and broke, come back grumbling and then it takes at least a week to get going again. Bah humbug!0
