    Very best of luck, Gen!

Many moons ago in a summer holiday I worked processing travel insurance claims, the default position was to find any small discrepancy in the documentation that was sent in with the claim and the wording of the T&C and send out a letter saying the claim did not meet with the conditions as some percentage of claims gave up atthat point, a high enough percentage to make sending out the letters worthwhile....

I have no doubt that this is what they're up to. It seems a bit risky in the new(ish) 'treating customers fairly' world given that as NDG points out, utility companies all seem to send bills out in a format which is unacceptable to the claims dept. The only bill she has in her full name is her mobile phone bill (which they no doubt won't accept!) and council tax - so basically they are saying you can only claim on the policy in April and May.

Told you Isaac had a toddler-fascination with phones.... He looks like an infant 1980s stock trader in this one. It was taken in OH's then Chambers, when Isaac was about 15 months old:

    .

If I need to pop out of the office, would he be OK to man ( boy?) the phones for me. Just say yes to customers and no to drivers, that's all he needs to know!
This just reminded me, at another house we lived in the neighbours 'stole' a bit of the orchard which was at the end of their garden. My parents thought about it and in the end decided to sell it to them rather cheaply. They decided ill will in neighbours was too expensive at any price but that giving it away opened the door to more trouble.

I never understand why peopel get into huge fights over something inconsequential, a hedge that is a foot out or something. You have to live with people for decades sometimes; far better to adopt the above approach.

    Naturally :)

As we were going around Ikea, I was trying to explain to my mum that I'm going to attempt create a grown-up, non-studenty atmosphere in my house.

Shortly after that I was very tempted to get a crocodile bath mat (from the childrens area).

    It's going to be a struggle :)

What I try for in clothes and home, is to come up with two adjectives that fit the style I am going for, then everything I buy, I ask does it fit cosy/country or glamourous/industrial, whatever the look is. Not foolproof, but it does help!

Good luck with job Gen. I suspect the manaager was putting the downers on this application because it would be pointless being in that job for a short time when the board appointment beckons in January.....

Mr Bugs was looking a lot better yesterday - that isn't good, just better because of the intravenous hydration. Still not sure what will happen when he comes out of hospital, he may need to go elsewhere.

Jelly, please no book recommendations, I have over a 100 waiting to be read. They both look interesting, particularly the second.

Juliet Bravo, Twin Peaks and Mr Ben.

Agree with Twin Peaks. In a way, I'd like them to re-do the 2nd series, where they lost it a bit.

From my childhood - Battle of the Planets.

I'm sure the choccie ones didn't come in until at least the late 1980's & it was fairly normal to save one years advent calendar to the next year and flatten it.

Advent calendars only had 24 doors as well, some today have 25 which annoys me intensely.

Other 1970's money saving tips from our household - cutting up christmas cards (with pinking shears to give a nice jagged edge) to use as gift tags for next year.

Carefully unwrapping presents so that you can use the wrapping paper again (still done occasionally if wrapping paper very nice).

One favourite uncle would wrap presents in newspaper, which would further be recycled as toilet paper (in strips hanging from a string) or go on the fire as a kind of newspaper log (all sounds like a Viz top tip, but I can assure you was true)

5 mile circular walks to post the local Christmas cards to save on postage.

I have a friend who has the old pockets advent calendar (used like Spirit also describes). Apparently they're over 20 years old & are now with the next generation.

I was impressed to read on a Quality Street box that their foils are recyclable, & the "plastic" on their sweets is biodegradeable & compostable, so if you seperate them, & recycle the box too, there's zero waste!:)

Best Christmas Film Ever. The entire Doozer famimly approves.

If he's the only one in over Chsrtistmas, no one will notice if he diverts the phone to the house, or you can go to the office too and make rude photocopies :D

    Not Die Hard?;)

I'm not big on Christmas films. However a few years ago a friend was very very ill at Christmas. I took them to see It's a Wonderful Life at the Electric cinema in Birmingham.

Have to say I really enjoyed the film a lot more on the big screen.

I'm 52% london - which surprised me, seeing as I've only ever spent 3 days there.

Zag, what/where is the midlands one?

Public Service Broadcasting last night. Superb gig. Proper live experience. Played 99% of the album, most of The War Room EP, & also 2 new tracks which sounded great!

Off to see Ludovico Einaudi on Thursday in oxford!

Actually, if I get the job, I'm 2 promotions away from The Board. That reflects the flat structure of that part of the organisation rather than my possible seniority unfortunately. Still I should get the odd ticket to sporting events out of it so not all bad.

It was a lovely day over here. 27C and sunny. My cycle into work was probably only the second this spring where the air didn't feel cold on my arms.

Politics are interesting over here. We had an election a while back and the former opposition won. However, while the new Government gets in straight away, lots of MPs don't take their seats until the middle of next year so we have a minority Government for a few months where the backbenchers are the lame ducks!!! So the opposition are in the position of being able to dictate terms to the new Government on passing their manifesto commitments. It's all very, very strange.

If the opposition (who are the majority for now) vote down a manifesto commitment twice then the Government can call a 'Double Dissolution' and we vote for a new lot of MPs who will take their seats immediately.

I'm pretty sure that's how it works. It's weird.
