    Oh, that's interesting!

    Give us the other side!

Yes it was entirely from the angle of the property owner.

It's been going on so long that I tuned out of much of the detail of late, but it was to do with the owner's perceived attitude to those who stood in the way of her speculative commercial purchase. The property is in the most sensitive part of the city, environmentally (right next to the walls / Minster / Deans' House etc), and it was her insistence at riding roughshod over the impact on local residents which made her unpopular locally. I wasn't aware of the specific parking issue, it was more to do with the incompatible impact of multiple parties in a beautiful outdoor setting near lots of residents.

She took a commercial business risk in buying the property, she's got her way, but made no friends in the process.

Well, despite including some pomegranate and coriander in my diet yesterdayso real fresh food.....I haven't been sick and I haven't been in pain and I haven't been anything else. In fact, feel great.

A bit late replying to this, but ... :j:beer::):T
I scoffed at first, but the architect had us make mood boards for each room. . It really does help one focus.

Maybe I should do that once I get round to redecorating. (Have to deal with the upstairs STUFF first. The downstairs stuff is more or less all done now.) Can you give any advice for how to get started on a mood board, and how to incorporate furniture that needs to go in that room and that you don't want to or can't reupholster etc?

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Throws for furniture I guess. I'm a big fan of reupholstering though. In my sitting room there is a day bed, a Victorian drop arm and a ten pound second hand cheapy. The did drop arm and the cheapy were recovered at the same time in different fabrics from same range ( because I hate for things to match). IMO they look good. Not great , I've certainly seen nicer, but ......considering I like them, and the two were cheaper to buy ( not re cover) than an ikea sofa I think.....its not a bad buy IMO.

The beautiful day bed is by far the nicest piece but looks tastiest because not recovered ( and springs are gone, but its so comfortable to nap on:o) I love its current velvet thou, so might try just to put new trim or cording on in the dodgy glued way. Not ideal but.......

I think loose covers can be made for the sort of chair or sofa that takes then quite easily and can be washed?

If you are sticking with what you have, then you put a swatch of that colour ( and texture if possible, even if a picture of it) on your mood board then start trying other colours and 'objects' that appeal to you.

Also, what you already have......if you have stuff you love...work with it, not against it, so snap it for your boards p...see which room it will go in.

Don't worry about what's 'right'. Our tv table is a singer table, we have a jardiere as a bin.

ATM of course, our house is still a dump but.......:D

I am looking for the perfect bathroom bin, The nearest one I have found to what I want is ply. But I think I probably want another planter. Or a champagne bucket.

OH is trying to claim on her mobile phone insurance. They have told her that unless she can produce a household bill from the last 2 months with her full first name and last name on it, they will not pay out! What kind of ludicrous policy is that! Initial + surname is not acceptable to them.

I sense a very long winded complaint and an ombudsman referral coming up.

Many moons ago in a summer holiday I worked processing travel insurance claims, the default position was to find any small discrepancy in the documentation that was sent in with the claim and the wording of the T&C and send out a letter saying the claim did not meet with the conditions as some percentage of claims gave up atthat point, a high enough percentage to make sending out the letters worthwhile....
    I think....

I agree with you - I don't think any of our utility bills have my full name on them; they are all either Mr. N.DB or Miss N. DG or a combination of both our initials + names.

Some criminals are very clever and it is very difficult to catch them.

Others are completely stupid and get caught. The reality is that most prosecuting agencies focus most of their time and resources on the latter because you can actually win the cases.

The number of cases I've been involved in where someone was caught with something dodgy in his car because he jumped a red light, had no tax disk, etc, is high.

You'd think if you have 20kg of drugs in your car, you'd drive jolly carefully. A lot of people don't think that way.

    Bathroom bins need lids.

    Naturally :)

As we were going around Ikea, I was trying to explain to my mum that I'm going to attempt create a grown-up, non-studenty atmosphere in my house.

Shortly after that I was very tempted to get a crocodile bath mat (from the childrens area).

    It's going to be a struggle :)

That sounds great! Isaac has slippers which are each crocodiles - when he puts each foot down, the mouth opens and a red tongue sticks out. If they did them in size 6, I'd get some. Sadly, they stop at size 4.

Isaac's getting much more generous and interested in the future baby - he suggested buying the baby some crocodile slippers, because he thought they'd amuse it. I said it would be a while before the baby benefitted from slippers than change when you walk (-:

Not sure if I have just been put in my place by one of my betters ;)

However any understanding of how class in the upper echelons of society works on my part is very much as an outsider looking in, we have always bought all our furniture....

All of it? Nothing donated by parents / grandparents early on?

We had a child-size rocking chair that I was given for my second birthday by my Nanna, who was given it as a child by her grandmother. We also have an armchair that my Granny was given as a wedding present; she recovered it several times over the years, so it's in very good condition.

In our hall we also have a couple of chair that OH's great-grandfather made.

I cannot alway operate a low level bin with a lid, if unsteady on pins. So, no small bins with lids.

I'm thinking mainly of the dining chairs (seats upholstered in a darkish blue velvety fabric I rather like) and the sofas (inherited from LNE who got black leather ones that I wouldn't have chosen). I'll give it a go when I've got enough brain-space for it, which isn't now.

Don't worry, I don't have the slightest problem using furniture in ways its original designer never envisaged. You are talking to somebody who grew up in a bedroom that had been a bedsit, with a dressing table consisting of a table cloth covering a cardboard box over two gas rings and a grill.
All of it? Nothing donated by parents / grandparents early on?

I've hardly ever bought furniture new. There's my bed (bought 22 years ago, with new mattress in 1999, really needs replacing) and a bookcase downstairs as well as a shelving unit in the family room. There are various things I've bought second-hand, too, as well as stuff from freecycle, and from various family and friends who were downsizing or upgrading, and a few things (like LNE's desk and the dining table & chairs) that were bought new as presents for us by his parents. Buying furniture new, unless completely unavoidable, feels like a recklessly extravagant thing to do.
