Yes, pressed 'R'. No Luck. The size is 112957mb in the partitioned space. Also, there is 8mb free space on the unpartitioned space.

Sorry went out, back now, hopefully this can be fixed tonight.

    Thanks,

That's a surprisingly large HDD for a four to five year old computer.

We can create a new drive letter, in order to install Windows XP using the Boot CD. That way, we won't disturb anything on your C drive.

So now, we have two clear options. Must admit, I have never used the Live CD. Maybe someone else has that expertise.
Hopefully, it will be straightforward and we can use Open Office to retrieve your documents.
Otherwise we'll go the XP route. Concentrate now. :)

Might be worth creating that new drive letter anyway. That way, you can have your important documents seperated from the Operating System, should it go wrong again.

How do I create the new drive letter?

Do I Install windows xp on the c drive and then partition. When the partition screen comes up there are two options, quick partition and the other is just a normal partition.

I dont think there is a way round this. Will do this tomorrow actually, going to bed.

Boot up with Boot CD. Choose Partition Tools- Partition Magic From there you should be able to create the partitions.

Partitioning and formatting aren't the same thing.

You can create a temporary one initially(You'll need around 5 GB for the Windows XP installation), to install Windows XP or another OS ie Windows 2000 in order to be able to retrieve your work.

If you no longer care about that, you can split the HDD into two or three different partitions of more or less equal size.

You can format them there and then with the file sytem of your choice or do that within Windows once installed.

    Sounds complicated, but isn't.

The main problem is/was getting your info/work to a safe place beforehand.

That's why you would need a PS/2 mouse.
Though it is still possible to do all of the work with the keyboard.
I don't want to go to the trouble of re-booting my computer into DOS mode to write you a tutorial if you are going to lose interest halfway.
You have to decide which course of action that you will take and then see it through to the end.
    Here's a basic guide; ftp://ftp.futurenet.co.uk/pub/pcanswers/tutorials/130.guide%20to%20PartitionMagic%208.pdf

Look at, 'Creating a back-up partition' 'Making a seperate partition for simple back ups'
It's a similar interface, you can choose to format in NTFS.

There are still half answered questions.
What happened to the Live CD?

Like I said there are many files in the WInrar. It's a ISO file but i downloaded it in winrar. I was asking if I should copy all the files onto the cd are particular ones. There are files like image, setup.exe, index etc etc.

Also can I just drag the files into the CD rather than burning it via Nero?

I don't understand when you write that you have downloaded it in Winrar. How did you do that?

I imagined that you just save the download to somewhere on your computer. How did Winrar become involved?

As far as I know, it should be a image file, from which you create a disc with Nero.

There should be a single image file. From Nero StartSmart, you may find an option to 'burn a CD from an image file'. That's the option you need.

It could be that Winrar is set up to read image files. You don't need to do that.

When I click on that link you gave me for the Linux CD its gives me the option to open or save the file. Either way it saves or opens with Winrar, there's no way of de-selecting that option unless I chose another program.
