I can't beleive this is still going on.

Donnie you confused matters by giving him that XP cd and now to bring the hiren cd in to it yet again is making matters worse. it has a load of great tools on there but they need some kind of computer expertise to use and the use of a linux boot disk would just confuse matters even more.

I would have had this sorted in 5 hours and that includes the drive from Bolton to London.

Moe ask your brother to sort it out if he has anything about him he will be able to remove the drive from the laptop and connect it in some way to your PC you will then be able to work on the stuff. It is very clear that you are not really up to this task, sorry to say that but its true. It is quite mission critical that the data is not destroyed and using the hirens cd makes the possibility of data loss very easy when in the hands of someone who doesnt really know what is going on.

Actually, I would have sorted it in one hour.
The XP disc makes no difference at all. He can install it without losing info. I don't know why you keep going on about this.

It's only still going on because nothing has actually been done.

So, what we are attempting to do is to move his important files on to another medium before repairing/re-installing Windows.

    It's quite simple.

I'm with donnie with this one, hence i kept out of the thread to leave him to it

Hirens CD will not overwrite any data and rushing things is more likely to cause errors, taking as long as needs be to get the files off is the best course ...

I do think that you are overstating the case.
With the re-installation of Windows, there is a possibility of the loss of documnts in the Documents and Settings folder.

As the OP doesn't have someone at hand to remove the drive, we are searching for simpler solutions.

Thus far all nothing you have suggested has moved the situation forward.

There are ways of moving the info over without removing the HDD, but in order to do that I have to 'tutor' the OP with the relevant program. Therefore I have to physically boot up the CD and go through the steps.

There is no chance of losing data in this manner.

So, unless you are willing to drive down from Bolton and to fix the problem at no cost, I suggest....

Nero isnt working. I really cant be bothered anyway really. I dont care if there is a risk, Ill just take the quickest option as this is doing my head in.

Shall I just install windows on the partitioned space?

    Thought that you went off.
Yes, go with that. We'll recover any 'lost documents. Just don't format anything.

Take note of the instructions on the CD

When I chose to install windows a screen comes up saying:

'THE PARTITION IS EITHER TOO FULL, DAMAGED, NOT FORMATTED, OR FORMATTED WITH AN INCOMPATIBLE FILE SYSTEM. TO CONTINUES INSTALLING WINDOWS, SETUP MUST FORMAT THIS PARTITION'

So got to format. Looks like im back to square one.

We may be able to re-size the partition.
