£1.50 text charge?????

Just found out that i have been billed £1.28 by Mobizar (Tanla Mobile Ltd) for an unsolicited text. Begrudgingly i sent the STOP text to 81404 and have filled in an online ICSTIS compalint.
Phoned O2 who said that they normally find that people had called the company in the past and in most cases it wasn't unsolicited.
How on earth can o2 take the side of a company who has been fined 4 times this year totalling £87000 for exactly this activity. 4 formal reprimands as well. It's clear whose side o2 are on. I wonder why. Maybe it's because o2 take 30% of the fraudulent income.
Like somebody else said earlier, the fines are just a tax on a fraudulent income. These fines do nothing to prevent the company doing it again and again. To them it's just an occupational hazard.
I'm not going to waste my time comaplaining to o2. I'm going to my MP with it.
Sorry for dragging an old thread up but Ive just noticed on my O2 bill 2 texts to 81404 for £2.55...
I have just subscribed to Nokia maps city explorer which says it will send you 4 texts at £1.50 each to get the licence for it (which is £6 for 2 years), not sure how then Ive managed to be charged £2.55 for 2 and where the other 2 are... But city explorer is working fine on my phone..
Just so you know this number isnt always a bad un....0 -
I shall continue dragging this up...I just received a text from 86069. I have never subscribed to any service; I send texts to friends and make phonecalls every now and then.
I have replied 'stop', and used Payphoneplus.org to get details of the company and their customer services, and have sent them an email requesting a refund for any charges incurred. It never ceases to amaze me how companies can be so brazen as to think you won't notice; without permission, it's stealing!
Just a heads up in case anyone else on O2 gets this text.
KiKi' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".0 -

I basically asked them to check my records to see whether I had sent any txts out to 81404, and also reiterated that I had not subscribed to them. I also said that since O2 gets a cut of premium rate charges, they have a duty to help investigate what I considered fraudulent activity.
Here was their reply:

Thanks for emailing us to find out if any text messages were sent to the shortcode 81404.
I've checked your recent bill and I'm unable to find any text messages sent to the shortcode 81404.
Account security is very important for us and we can't sell your account details to a third party. I'm unable to tell you how 'Mobizar' got your account details.
On your current bill you've been charged £1.50 including VAT (Value Added Tax) for receiving a premium text message from 81404. I've credited this amount (£1.50 including VAT) to your online account and this credit will be added to your next online bill.
Please note that this is a one time credit adjustment.

Might give Tanla a call anyway to make sure I'm not registered on their 'system' and won't receive any more Premium txts.
Does anybody know if there's a way of identifying Premium Rate Text messages when receiving them?
Just had the same problem as you I was billed for this service as well. I called TANLA who operate the number and they told me it was nokia maps for the mobile. And I remembered I had subscribed for a 1 day trial.
TANLA are on 0207 494 5600 and were very helpful.
If you're thinking of doing that its poor value as the N95 I use doesnt pick up the GPS very well. Get a Tomtom!0 -
I have just checked my teenage daughters mobile phone bill and found 3 £1.20 charges marked against 'text service received' and the number 700042001. On questioning her I discovered she had been phoning 118 118 directory enquiries (charge 10p) and then she is sent a text message with a joke and it is costing £1.20 for this text. I am not laughing! She had no idea of these charges and I am horrified to think she could have been doing this several times a day. Be warned.0

Hi
Same deal as everyone else here. Received an 81404 reverse charged
SMS for £1.27 + VAT on my O2 bill to which I hadn't subscribed or even
recieved. Apparently it came from Tanla Mobile (surprise surprise).
Spoken to O2 three times now including a manager - all of whom said
they couldn't do anything. Spoke to Tanla Mobile and got a call
centre in India twice. Both times they said someone would call me
back in 2-3 working days (I'm still waiting). Have also reported this
to ISCTIS - http://www.icstis.org.uk/consumers/how_to_complain/default.asp.
Tanla Mobile are no stranger to ISCTIS and reverse charge texts -

...//....I got scammed back in June. I made a complaint to icstis and got a reply today. We got 'em! Tanla Mobile, the company which ran the scam, were fined £50,000 and the service was barred. If you want your money back, go to Tanla Mobile Ltd, 39 Charing Cross Road, London WC2H 0AR.
Just received a text from 81404 so clearly if Tanla mobile were caught they're either back in business or trading under a different name or someone else is using this short code.
I have never sent a text to this number and have never signed up to any text service.
I guess I'm going to have to wait for my next bill to see if I've been charged.0 -
I had some on vodafone from circle marketing ltd - tried in vain to cancel account - even though offered to pay including cancellation period. Just want to stop these clowns fleecing my account. (sending stop will not neccessarily canx these).
Vodafone being obstinate and will not do this so have offered them the chance to see me in court for a £10.21 fee......:mad:You cant take the trousers off an elephant!0 -

No disrespect to the poster but can anyone else confirm this as I just tried to call it and it says number unobtainable - although it was posted over a year ago.
Just received another of there ******* texts and I'm pretty damned sure I'll be billed for them as everyone else has. That's two now.

Contact phone numbers.

I was scammed a couple of years ago.
I received a cheque from the scammers and T Mobile refunded the money as well.
Not before I'd bombarded them both with complaints though.0 -

Unfortunately, I've only just received my latest bill in the last week so I'm going to have to wait a whole month before knowing if I've been billed for them or not since Vodafone don't provide an up-to-date billing system, only monthly billing.
Thanks though, have emailed Tanla and reported them to both Vodafone and ICSTIS.0
