  • Hi, another newbie, although I have been lurking on this forum for years.

Did any other users who received these DVDs ever use Groupon uk or Groupon . de ? They seem to have passed on a unique email address that I created (with my own domain) to spammers, and I am getting daily spam messages advertising gambling sites.
This started happening as soon as I unsubscribed from their daily emails. And now this DVD spam, just made me think they may be connected..

    Thanks
    Karl

By the sounds of it, possibly an amalgamation of lists that are in some cases 5-10 years old.

So far there doesn't seem to be a common source.
In my case, I can't even think of where they might have got my details from, as they used a name format I've never used online (initials and surname), however others I think had it addressed with a full first name and surname.
  • I just got the same but delivered to my parent's address where I haven't lived for 7 years- thank god they didn't open the envelope!
  • I returned from holiday abroad last week and sitting in the living room with the family opening a pile of post. I was deep in conversation with my 12 year old son as I opened the envelope and pulled out the two !!!!!! DVDs infront of him. Luckily I was quick enough putting them back in the envelope that he didn't see what they were but my reaction was enough for him to ask what they were.

Neither myself nor my OH, have received any !!!!!! through the post, should I take it personally? ;)
Good enough is good enough, and I am more than good enough!:j

If all else fails, remember, keep calm and hug a spaniel!
  • I've just spent 10 mins trying to speak to the police on 101 - told me to call 'Action Fraud' even though I couldn't see how it was a fraud matter. 8 minutes later - surprise, surprise, they tell me it's not fraid and that trading standards are dealing with it. So, basically, the police aren't interested.

I've found reports that look to be dated back to 2006 of things coming from that address - why hasn't the Post Office stopped them if they contravene their regulations - could it be that they are happy to take the postage costs from whoever is sending them?? Mine was sent in a Royal Mail postage paid envelope - so they know exactly who and where these things are coming from.
  • No "free" DVD's for me, alas...But thanks MSE for making me aware of it happening. This thread's been a very interesting read! :)
(It also warns me to advise my relatives NOT to open any mail they receive for me at their addresses, but instead to keep it sealed and hand it to me for *ahem* "inspection". ;) :rotfl: )

One thing that might be of interest though is what people have been saying about the PIN "protection" on these disks:
    • I tried producing a survival related DVD for a group that I'm a member of around last Yule, which had a few Easter Eggs that were similarly meant to be hidden behind a PIN screen...But due to a mastering error on my part, all of the "hidden" Easter Eggs could be viewed by simply letting the DVD play on through the end of the last chapter.
    • Being a bit of a tinkerer and knowing a few people who watch this sort of thing, I've recovered (Paid-for but misplaced) master PINs from professionally done adult DVDs in the past. These PINs are normally encoded into the DVD menu structure in a quite intelligent way which is fairly hard (Though not impossible) for humans to follow, which contrasts to both my own DVD and the mass-mailed ones discussed in this thread.
    • Conclusion: I would stab a guess that these R-18 DVDs have been created by a sole agent ripping/downloading the features in question, mastering a DVD image (Badly) with a PIN screen tacked onto the front of it, having them pressed by a low-cost media producer (Most likely an underground house) on cheap stock, then sending them out (Under a counterfeited mass-mail imprint?) in the hope of scraping a grand or two from it all.
Anyhow...What's the betting I'm going to open the post tomorrow to find an envelope containing two Disney DVDs protected by the PIN code "1234"? :D:p

Of course they do. See this earlier post in the thread.
