  • Hi All,

just a quicky as I'm so chuffed I need to post it before I burst.

I just managed my first > 30 minute run, it was just under 32 minutes and was just over 5k, I think roughly 10k per hour, so If I can get the distance up some more I should be well on my way to my 10k in less than 1 hour goal :)

Other good news is that I am overweight!!!!, good news you say? yep because until today I was obese!, my BMI is now under 29.75 which just gets me in under the obese mark.

I've lost 2 stone now since November and am feeling great, its wonderful to start the new year as an overweight man and leave the old obese one in 2008 :)

    Happy new year to everyone!!!!

    30DB,

Congratulations on the leaving the obese behind, it feels good doesn't it?

Mine was 30.6 in September so I know where you're coming from!:D

It sounds identical in the sense that I then had a 60 min 10K on the horizon too, with a following wind, so you will do it.

The good news is that it just keeps getting better, so good luck and have a great 2009!:D :D:D

  • Thanks Becky, Rich and Hypno,

I'm really buzzing at the moment, its a great feeling.

What the best way forward now though?

I have a 10k race in May, should I continue doing 5k runs and building up the speed or work on distance first?

    Thanks again everyone!

  • 30DB,

Distance without question. Forget about speed, just by getting stronger through distance work (and losing more weight as a result) you will easily get under 60 mins for 10K.

Your main emphasis now should be on trying to get all your runs to be a minimum of 4 miles, even if it means doing less runs. This is the 'training effect threshold' which really gets the improvement momentum moving!:D

  • Thanks Rich, your advice is always golden so it shall now become my training motto :)

I must admit I have been preferring to run to time instead of distance, I feel it makes me run at a more steady pace because I'm not so desperate to get to the "finish posts"

My plan is to steadily increase the time over the next few weeks (by about 2 minutes per day) until I can knock out 60 mins.

The only problem is that I run during my lunch hour, which means I'm gonna start running out of warm up/down and shower time :)

  • Whatever you're most comfortable with!

Just bear in mind that the more easily you run, the more fat you burn and hence the quicker the improvements come!

Might be counter intuitive, but you develop speed quicker by running more slowly at this stage!:D

PS If you struggle to fit the runs in you can always join the ranks of the 6am squad! It tends to only consist of Becky with occassional guest appearances by myself and one or two others, but its certainly a good time to run!
