I know Rich - but its hard to convince your mother of that when your sister was very ill with eating disorders for a long time and she now sees me running a lot and getting smaller a lot and I've tried to explain it isnt about that, but I dont think she 'gets' running as a means in itself *sigh*
Anyway, having a moany day will shhhh now and get back to more interesting things - so how come you've never heard of runners reflux all knowing coachie??0 -

Fair dos - but you know she'll be impressed when you cross that London finishing line in 3-29 and then she sees you put a few lbs on over the next month!:D

Are you trying to say I am making it up?? Its been investigated in a few serious medical journals you know...apparently non weight bearing exercise produces less problems and some people get it so badly they have to give up running - arghhhh...but thats when they get it while running, so no problems for me there
Okay, so another question for peeps in general - how difficult is it to explain running to those who dont run?? I find generally my enthusiasm for it sways them, but there are a few among my close friends and family who just refuse to 'get it' and seem to insinuate there's something wrong with me (not that it would stop me running by the way)...anyone else have this problem??0 -
I'm sure you're not making it up! It sounds quite uncomfortable tbh. I've seen things linked to IBS before that are triggered by running but not the term 'runner's reflux', but it all sounds similar.
Yep, in the end you give up! That's what running clubs are for, so you can talk to other nutters who partake in a strange activity that anyone with an ounce of sanity wouldn't touch with a bargepole!:p
It is difficult, but then again I expect trainspotters are completely enthralled by what they do, but they'd have a hell of a job convincing me. Come to think of it fishing would fall into the same category, and yet that is the biggest participation sport in the country!
You get attracted to certain sports because they fit your character I suppose and you'll never convince people of a different character type of the merits.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Yes, its interesting trying to explain why you like running to non-runners. To be honest, I was the same until I tried it. I kind of always had a sneaky interest in it though. I had a dream many years ago and I can still vividly remember it. I was running but it felt like I was gliding really fast just above some damp dewy grass. This was many years before i took up running but it stayed with me and I suppose i wondered if running could ever feel like that. I have to say, it only ever has very occasionally but it is still great.
TBH I quite like it when people turn away, bewildered as to why I run, totally unable to understand what I like about it. It is good to be different and retain a bit of mystery.
Becky - I hope the runners reflux gets better. Now Christmas is here all the Gaviscon ads are on TV. I have never suffered from it myself. My runners wind goes the other way!
Yes, I know. TMI. I'll get my coat....

Explaining's easy, I reckon...
"I wanna exercise...I can drive to the gym and pay £50/month to do it, or i can just run out of the door..."
"You get to see stuff, different places...get out in the fresh air"
"You don't need any expensive equipment" (doesn't work *too well* in my case, as you can imagine...the gadgets kinda ruin it)
"Gives you a chance to mull over the day's events"
"If you do the FLM, you can put that on your CV - then everyone will know how dedicated you are"
And so on...I think the hard thing is answering "why do you want to exercise", but after that, the "why running" bit is easy
(and to be fair, when you have a belly like mine, the "why exercise" question never gets asked)

Morning All,
Heartburn sooo much better this morning, despite all the junk food!
Didnt want to push too much though so did a mile warm up, three intervals at 8 mins, 7.30 and 8 again and a mile cool down which was quite enough for today to get the endorphins going without starting the heartburn againI think the hard thing is answering "why do you want to exercise", but after that, the "why running" bit is easy
Idio I love your reasons, but this is the hard one amongst my friends, especially since before June I hardly ever exercised at all (I'd been playing footy about 6 months to year at that point and before footie I did zero exercise)...they just dont get why I want to do so much now - if I'd been a sporty kid or overweight when I started I suspect people would be easier to convince...ah well I like Chick's mystery idea, I'm going to give up explaining and just tell them to try it
I have convinced two people to take up and one to re-start running though so I cant be oding that badly
Happy running everyone!0 -
Mon22/12 Rest Day
Tues23/12 3 x 1mile (6:40, 800-3:14, abandoned)
Good morning fellow running enthusiasts!:D
Today's intervals were attempted so thats a start!:p
Unfortunately, the legs somehow remembered that they raced on Saturday and then did a really hard 14 miler on Sunday. They decided that enough was enough for now and who can blame them!
So it was abandoned half way through the second rep, but despite the legs not playing ball something still felt really good. I can't really explain it, but it might be just the simple fact of being able to run in the region of 6-30 miling on tired legs, even if it wasn't for very far.
So no problems at all - and at least I'm fully awake and raring to go now so something was achieved!:D
Becky - are you sure you want to go to NY, it looks mighty COLD!:eek:Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Yes I want to go!!!!!!!! I went to buy warm boots yesterday after work and ended up buying a dress - whoops
Sorry about your intervals but it does wake you up certainly
Oh by the way - love the avvy - very nice! I'm off to look for a xmassy one now...0 -
Are you safe to be let out shopping?:p
Even I can tell the difference between a pair of boots and a dress!!!
Thanks, but there was no problem with the intervals - it was just expecting a bit much trying to do three hard quality sessions in 4 days!
But I managed to get a good dose of endorphins out of such a short session, so I'm happy!:D
I bagged that avvy before you found it - thinking that it would be so appropriate for your _rtw suffix!Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j
