Rich I do wonder about that whole run/walk thing - it seems to be written about everywhere but for me it just doesnt work - I'm suspiscious of anything that causes my muscles to stop/start suddenly because thats how you get injured in football for example - especially outside in the cold, but I suppose it cant be that bad if its recommend everywhere...

I guess what I'm asking is what does stop/start do in terms of biomechanics and heat in warmed muscles?? Go on make it sciencey for me :D

The problem is that it is very sciencey, so is difficult to summarise succinctly!

However, with reference to the bible of any serious runner, 'The Lore Of Running' there are several points which are relevant in discussion of marathon training:

    1. Even reasonably healthy, young, and otherwise athletic individuals will most certainly develop injuries between the 8th and 12th weeks of training if they do not first start with a solid base of walking.

    2. Although most people think that to become runners they must begin by running, it is essential to only walk for at least the first 3 weeks and then to introduce running very slowly. It is, in fact, far better to walk for the first 6 weeks of the program rather than risk an injury, which might force you to stop running for 6 weeks.

    3. The initial walking period allows the bones time to strengthen so that they can resist the more demanding stresses to which they will be exposed susequently.

    4. During weeks 4 to 17 certain symptoms may appear for the first time. These include persistent calf muscle soreness and discomfort along the border of the shinbone - the tibia (shin splints). These symptoms indicate that training, however light it may appear, is too intensive and that more rest days and less distance is required until symptoms abate.

    5. Evidence suggests that during early training the bones in the lower limbs undergo some demineralisation before acclimatising and becoming stronger after a few months of training. During the early weeks of training any unnecessary stress, indicated by soreness or discomfort in the lower limbs, should be avoided at all costs as chronic conditions in the lower limbs can easily be set in motion at this stage of training.

The pains experienced when trying to restart running after stopping represent the 'unnecessry stress' on the lower limb bones and should therefore be avoided to prevent recurring lower limb injuries in the future.

    Poorbabe,

Sorry to hear about the injury - but it is true that you wont lose much fitness even if you take a month off. Concentrate on getting it fixed!

If its an old injury at least you know you can recover from it and still run a marathon.

    I hope you're still enjoying the post-marathon glow of achievement!:D :D

    Hi Rich

I most certainly am. Everytime I look at my very pretty medal I remember the pain of the last 4 miles, but also the joy in knowing that I really can run 26.2 miles :j :T

Hip is making progress. No Epsom salts as I couldn't be bothered to leave the house, but will do tomorrow as I am determined to have a UK/Caribbean Christmas breakfast and/or dinner in this part of the US. Would you believe the local supermarket doesn't have fresh fish  , so friend will have to make a long trek from the 'burbs to the city so I can stock up.

Am missing UK television, even though I don't watch it much. I get more international news in Jamaica and the US doesn't seem to acknowledge the rest of the world  .

Take care all and keep on running :A

Hey Poor - hope you find some news...I tend to pick the Guardian weekly when away for at least a little bit of international news! :D

Thanks for answering that Rich - I'm wondering about the proteins that break up muscles when running in terms of eccentric motion and DOMS and the effect that stop/start has on that. Since running involves all three types of motion and walking doesnt in the same way I wonder if its the sharp change from one to another that causes a problem? Anyway, for me its akin to pulling up to fast at the end of run and not easing down over the last 10-15 metres, which equals sore muscles the next day (DOMS basically)...

    Happy xmas MM2!

I have to say I missed my run today as it was too dark at my friends - may get one in before my train home this evening...but I'm not going to stress too much about it as I stayed up late gassing to my firend anyway and am pretty tired now, good job I have loads of work to finish eh! :D

**still confused at the science stuff** :rotfl:

You lot are far too intelligent for me :o

My children are at a Christmas party later this morning so I am going to drop them off and then go for a run - 6 miles is planned and will set me up nicely for the Christmas period - also it means that if I don't get out until the weekend, it won't be a problem!

OH is working on boxing day, so that is a bit of a "non-day" for us, so I may well use it as an opportunity to get my trainers on in daylight (well, that is the plan anyway!)

I will pop back on later and report on today's run, but for those of you who have more in life than MSE......

    Happy Christmas :D

    :santa2:Hi everyone.
I am fifty next year - and want to start running
Is the book above a good one to start wit? I have brought others, but they start off by telling me to just 'run for 3 minutes bursts to start with'. As I cant run for 3 seconds I think this is unatainable !!!

Shall I start with walking? Does that help? I will be going in the evenings, so do I eat before I go...............sorry - so many questions - but a complete and utter (unfit) novice here:rolleyes:
    Any advise much appreciated :D

    Happy Christmas to you all

    Hello DFF!

    Welcome :D

I would start with a program of walking - one to build strength, two because unlike running you can get into straight away with much less chance of injury - say a six week program - Rich did one earlier in the year to get back into fitness before starting his marathon running program so I'm sure he could give some pointers on the specifics but if you're really unfit (like I was when I started) then i reckon you dont want to be walking more than 3 miles at a time 3 or 4 days a week at a pace that leaves you short of breath but not collasping.

If you start with this grounding then when you actually start running you'll find it a lot easier and you'll progress faster as your muscles and bones will be stronger and walking burns more fat than running so its a great benefit ot your health as well.

Hope that helps! Any questions just ask and we'll do our best to answer them :D, we're firendly here, but a little nuts (running does that to you!).

Have fun and dont forget to report your progress - posting can be a great motivator/kick up the bum!

    Happy Christmas!
