    Morning early birds!

Didn't do any running, today, but did a mystery shop before work so that counts as early stuff, right? Nah, I didn't think so either! I did have this brief thought before I went to bed last night that I would catch up last nights missed run with a quick couple of miles this morning......

but of course those thoughts don't last long in my head :o

    Have a good day everyone!

Ok I've been lurking on this thread for a while - I really want to run a marathon - preferably before I'm 40 next June! The problem is I have never done any running before (and I do mean never!!!!) At
school I avoided any sort of running activity - especialy long distance! i use to go to the gym fairly regularly - but my favorite thing was spinning - but I haven't been since October so my fitness level is dire!
I have no running shoes and I have no idea what I need - I do have a £20 JJB voucher so i will be hitting the sales!
Any help, inspiration and support needed!

    Hey Judi!

Welcome to the running thread :D

Rich is the man for training programms for marathons - I said I would never do one either - and now I'm doing London in April and Venice in October - I blame him completely ;)

There's some great advice somewhere on the thread about trainer buying, but I just bought a pair I found comfy in the shop, were running shoes (and not trendy sports wear ones) and removed the insoles and bought some running ones - a lot of peeps here use sorthbathane (sp?) insoles as they reduce the impact to your joints.

I started in June this year, with very small amounts (a mile or two) and now can run for 14 miles so anything is possible.

    Good luck!

    Welcome along Judi!

You actually sound like a typical candidate for becoming a marathon runner. The biggest obstacle is simply being motivated to do it - so if you want to run a marathon you will, its as simple as that.

Next June might be a bit early if you've done no running, because you want to enjoy the experience rather than struggle around and be virtually dead at the end! 26 miles is a long way to suffer!

But theres no rush. Despite what certain people on here might say (not mentioning any names, Becky!) you are very young so have loads of time to get prepared nice and slowly so you can really enjoy the achievement.

First things first though. Running shoes are not too important as long as they are running shoes and they're comfortable. No need to spend more than about £30 tbh - don't buy the latest models, just go straight for the sales items!

Then once your feet are kitted out we can have a look at a nice gentle easing into some running!:D :D

  • Judi, i think 5k is a good start, just over 3miles...

and when you cant run, 3mile is a long way.

I only started again 3 weeks ago, and i found that if i set off too fast, by 6-7mins in i would be dead on my feet and time to head back. The aim was too set off slow, and remain slow until i have reached he distance, or reached the pain in my legs, then either stop and go home, or stop, stretch off and carry on.

I met some old man (about 70) on sunday, said he runs for aslong as he can, then takes 2-3mins walk and carrys on again, been doing that for 25years and does about 2hrs 40m every sunday morning..

    Reminds me of him..

Though dont think there will be any running today, dont feel up for it after sleeping on the floor again.

    Hi Alias,

I agree about the starting slowly thing - training is not a race! Training is testing your limits in other ways and increasing your endurance.

I've never done the run/walk thing because I just stop and cant start again - it hurts my thighs too much, but I know lots of places recommend it...I just thought if it hurts that much it cant be good for me - when I started I had a 3 mile route, walked it lots of times, then ran a third and walked the rest of the way and just kept increasing it till I could run the three miles!

Sorry to hear about sleeping on the floor - hope you get out for some running soon :D
  • I tend to stop when i have a stitch, pick 2 marks as a stop and a start, then walk with arms in the air till it clears then press on again.

Dont worry about the floor thing, its for my own safety as the wife attacked me last night.

Alias, do you get stitches regularly?

Usually the cause would be eating too close to the run (within 3 hours) or insufficient stretching before the run.

One way or another you should be able to eliminate stitches altogether apart from the odd very strenuous session!

Wife attacked you? Jeez, this is the season of goodwill to all men!:p :p

  • Becky,

The way you started out is the best way to build core strength to the appropriate level before putting too much stress on the body.

The core strength, and stability, for running comes mainly from the buttocks, but also the hips and lower back.

The way to build core strength comfortably is through walking (with plenty undulations preferably) and comfortable running. Once the body wants to stop then you are past the point of comfortable running and should walk the rest of the session. To do otherwise increases the risk of long term injuries exponentially and achieves nothing in terms of improving fitness.

So you obviously got it spot on and have the core strength to handle distance runs of at least 14 miles now as a result of that initial cautious approach.:D :D
