Jolly, if you are anything like me, you will astound yourself with your improvement in a short space of time. By October you will be a PRO :D

  • Jolly,

At the moment 10 miles will seem like a long, long way to be running.

However, way before October you will be wondering why it ever seemed like such a big deal.

There are people running half marathons and marathons who never thought they would run a mile continuously.

The key is to take it all easily, at least for the first 3-4 months.

Even after that, faster work will only ever acount for about 10-15% of total mileage - and that is only if you're getting ambitious by that stage.

So just relax and start walking. If you're interested, I've listed every session I have done (it started around 27th August I think) with weekly summaries every Sunday. You will see how easy the first 8 weeks were taken with mostly walking involved and the bit of running being very slow!

So good luck, its great fun....and just wait for the endorphin rushes!:D

    Well that was pleasantly surprising!:D

It was one of those effortless, gliding runs which clearly shows that I am fully recovered from the 14 miler on Sunday.

I'm still a bit surprised to get round this at 8:01 pace, and 7:53 pace for the last 3 miles after the big hill was out of the way, with no pushing at any stage. The 10K was passed in 49:21. Comparing that to 7:51 pace for the time trial on Sunday when everything was put on the line on a flat track has left me scratching my head a little!

But in a good way of course!:D

    :santa2:Hi everyone.
I am fifty next year - and want to start running
Is the book above a good one to start wit? I have brought others, but they start off by telling me to just 'run for 3 minutes bursts to start with'. As I cant run for 3 seconds I think this is unatainable !!!

Shall I start with walking? Does that help? I will be going in the evenings, so do I eat before I go...............sorry - so many questions - but a complete and utter (unfit) novice here:rolleyes:
    Any advise much appreciated :D

    Happy Christmas to you all

Hi, i think you can run for longer than you think. Instead of running at full pace, how about starting to jog taking short steps, fast legs but at the pace of 1,2,3,4. Then when at the point of stopping, pick 2 points on the route to reduce to walk and start up again and stick to them. Easy to walk past.

Within 1 week you will work out where your at and at what pace you can jog / run at.

Im knocking out 10-11min miles, but im here for distance, not for speed..

    Thur 11th Dec - 3.1 (5k) mile jog / run 30m 38s (non-stop)

    Wk 2

    Sun 14th Dec - 3.5mile jog / partial run in 35m20s
    Tues 16th Dec - 3.1 (5k) total failure - walked it
    Thur 18th Dec - 3.1mile (5k) in 28mins 47secs

    Wk 3

    Sun 21st Dec - 4.1miles in 45mins (estimated - not timed)
    Wed 24th Dec - 2.97mile in 28mins (estimated - not timed)

Missed yesterdays run, so went out today instead to keep things ticking over. Got up this morning, had the dreaded sore throat, runny nose but simply ignored it. Was good to get out, run the new route solid, nearly went over on face, but thats part of running on pavements, they aren't always smooth.

Looking good for now, wont push the distance up till we start training in the new year.

    Merry Xmas Everyone

The good thing about getting out early on xmas day is that you get to see Santa finishing off his rounds.

To say that the guy had been on a long, long night shift he didn't look a bit tired - he just gave me a cheery wave and carried on delivering his packages. I watched him for a while and still can't work out how he got down those non-existent chimneys!

Anyway, for an 800+ year old guy he's certainly in good shape - I wonder if he'll give us some endurance training tips?:p

    Happy feasting!:D :D

Anyway, I got my asked for camelback (yippee) - not the pink one though ;), so I'm going to give that a try on Sunday's 14 miler :D

Nice running Rich - wowee the seconds are coming off those minute miles pretty quickly arent they :D

Good running Alias and nice to see you Sue-UU - glad to hear the walkings being kept up :D

Come on Hypno for your sub 60 minutes on New Years Day - I reckon you'll do it!!
