Feel compelled to say that I think you lot are pretty inspirational - I used to be really fit completing the Marathon in 4 hr 20mins in 2004. Now I can barely climb two flights of stairs without struggling!!! Have made it clear to myself that this cannot continue and will be making an effort to get fit again over the coming weeks and months.
My friend bought me a great running jacket from Aldi the other day along with a tiny little mp3 player (which fits brilliantly into the pocket on the sleeve of the running jacket) and I WILL make use of it. I've got enough time on my hands at the moment that I intend to use it wisely.
I park about 20 mins run from work and have been doing this every day for the past 15 months via a brisk walk, but I'm going to try running it - nae jogging / walking - over the next few weeks. I get so bored walking it and it's the perfect chance to be running again.
I just need to motivate my fat buttocks to move!Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!0 -

Hi btb,
At least you know you can do it, and how to do it, since you've been there before.
The only other component is wanting to get back and it seems you've decided thats going to happen.
So good luck - just take it slowly and you'll soon build up again!Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Just got back from the Merthyr Mawr Christmas Pudding 10k - can highly recommend it.
Quite a challenging course, starting with the "big dipper", giant sand dune (had to walk to the top because of traffic, but don't think I'd have made it anyway...so sapping for your quads, just took all the energy straight out of them).
Good mixture of terrains, a fair amount of mud, some fairly icy roads, lots of dune running. Couple of fairly harsh hills (including the big dune, although bouncing down the other side was awesome fun) and three bits through rivers (the deepest just above the knee - my God the water was *cold*)
Good caliber of runner out, was doing 9 minute miles on the flat, but was being overtaken more than I was catching people (was running gently to keep a mate company).
Some lovely scenery, really picturesque - and in the goody bag, the pudding, a choccy bar and a nice slate commemorative coaster. Bought a race tee for £7 - and it has my name on it!
Anyway, got round in 1:02:44 in the end, Garmin shows less than 10k (5.8 miles), but all things considered, was quite pleased with the pace (there was *bad* traffic at the start, lots of standing at bottlenecks and so on, so I think the first mile took 15 minutes or so)
Will definitely be doing it again next year
Just working on some graphs for you guys now0 -
Oh, forgot to add, Mulled wine at half wine - very warming0

Need to pop out tonight for run, dont feel up too it at all due to the long shifts im working.
Will just be 30mins - 5k to keep things ticking over.0 -
No running for me this weekend, decided to recover properly and recharge my batteries. I hope to go out tomorrow evening for a short steady run round the block just to get back into things.
Sounds like you have all had a fab weekend! Hope you didn't get too wet!Successful women can still have their feet on the ground. They just wear better shoes. (Maud Van de Venne)Life begins at the end of your comfort zone (Neale Donald Walsch)0 -
The list now becomes..
Wk 1
Sun 7th Dec - Skegness 4.5k fun run in 22m 53s
Tues 9th Dec - 3.1 (5k) mile jog / run just under 30mins (non-stop)
Thur 11th Dec - 3.1 (5k) mile jog / run 30m 38s (non-stop)
Wk 2
Sunday 14th Dec - 3.5mile jog / partial run in 35m20s
The first 2mile went in 17m20secs, which was ok but i had to stop for about 2 mins to stretch the calfs off, they were hurting real bad to the point that i was thinking of stopping in total tonight. I had decided to change my route and run another way, which involved the wife driving 3.5mile away, and me running back. So the first 2mile was along the dual carriageway on the rough tarmac / grass on the edge, then the other 1.5mile which was part of the 3mile route i normally take.
When i reached the 2mile point, i had to stop to stretch the calfs off and probably did about another 0.6mile before i had to stop again, then about another 0.5mile after that.
When i got to the end, the pain was constant. Unsure why this is, unless its the change or ground thats caused some muscle useage.
Any tips.?
Plan to run this next sunday as my long run, and the normal 3mile (5k) tuesday and wednesday concetrating on getting the time down.
The 35min time includes the time to stretch the legs off as i forgot to stop the watch.0 -
Idio - Sounds like a mixture of everything there, cross country, sand dunes, road running, trail running, swimming, xmas party etc etc.
I'm not surprised you enjoyed it, although if I was in a 10K race with alcohol en route I'd be trying to make it last at least 2 hours!!:p:p You're obviously more of a professional!
Hypno - Its amazing the difference that another 24 hours can do in regenerating the body, so I'm sure you'll feel raring to go tomorrow!
Alias - Well done on getting out there again. As far as the calf stiffness is concerned you should be able to eliminate that altogether with proper calf stretching before the run. Often referred to as 'pushing the wall down' you need to stretch each calf in turn, holding in the stretch position for around 45 seconds or until you feel the calf relax completely.
Well done to anyone else who has been out over the weekend and is yet to post!Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Mon15/12 Rest Day
Tues16/12 3 x 1 mile (7:18, abandoned, abandoned)
This morning was the 3 x 1 mile interval session, or at least was supposed to be!
Conditions were fine, I was properly warmed up and fully rested so it is somewhat puzzling why it was so difficult.
These reps should have been run at roughly 6:20 - 6:25 pace, so to struggle through the first at 7:18 with no ability to push any harder was just odd. Further reps would have been slower so there was no point continuing.
Right now I can't really find a reason except possibly a slight tickle in the throat which might have something to do with it. We will see...................
Hope everyone else has better runs than that!Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j
