Sounds like a good run again becky! I wouldn't be able to count and run at the same time - it is all I can do to keep going
I would lose count.......14......15......15......15.......21..........30........:rotfl:

OK so stupid Question is Fartlek the same as intervals then?? When you say rest im guessing you mean dropping back to an easy pace for a min then back to it?I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change And breakaway. I'll take a risk, take a chance, make a change and breakaway ....

No question is a stupid question Sallyx! Not on this site, anyway!!
I always thought they were different, but I don't suppose they are really - fartlek just means "speed play" and is just a way of focusing your attention for a while on going as fast as you bloomin well can!
So whether you are doing it for a mile interval, or between two lamp-posts, doesn't really matter - you are having a spurt of speed and then "recovering" in between before doing it again.
I would find a mile "flat out" really difficult, but I can probably manage a couple of lamp-posts. Eventually I will be able to do the mile thing!
The running club I have just joined do a variety of speed exercises. I will pm you the link and you can get some ideas from that perhaps?Successful women can still have their feet on the ground. Sally,
Intervals are formalised Fartlek session where the 'interval' is fixed at 400m, 800m, 1 mile, 2 mile etc with fixed recovery of 1 minute to allow the pulse to drop back to 120 for an average person.
They are designed to be done on a track where accurate distances are obviously easy to manage.
However, intervals are mentally much harder to deal with than fartlek. The idea of unstructured fartlek is to get your body used to experiencing different speeds without adding in the psychological battle necessary in intervals. Fartlek allows a session to be as hard or as easy as the body requires.
So in one sense they are exactly the same thing but in terms of mental requirements they are worlds apart!Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

I dont know if this is just me - but having the structure makes it more difficult - on fartlek I can always be like 'ooo I'll just ease off for a moment and catch my breath' whereas on intervals (or yesterdays anyway) I kept going beyond that point because I knew I had another two laps to go...

Morning All!
Well done hypno!!!! Its great when you make progress without really trying to as well - it comes as a pleasant surprise but really its all those great interval sessions paying off again
Sally - you rest for 1 minute between mile intervals.
Soooo I did my 6 miles this morning but I'm no so sure I did now - I definitely counted 22 laps which is just over 6 miles but my time was 48 mins - I was on pulse 140 when I stopped but didnt really feel like I was pushing because I was in such a day dream...48 mins is way faster than last time which is making me suspicious of my time now...if I can replicate on Thursday then we'll know for sure I guess...
Happy running everyone
Now that is puzzling compared to previous runs, but not puzzling enough to be unbelievable!
In pure numbers it actually looks about right. You did the same pace of about 8 mins/mile on your first run in the garden over 4.5 miles (ie your first completely flat run), so the pace maybe right.
The pulse at 140 doesn't look too unlikely either. If you think of getting to 4.5 at 8 min mile pace on a 120 pulse, it is likely that your pulse would rise as you got 'in the zone' and continued that pace for more distance.
As you say, the next run will confirm or otherwise, but a 50 minute 10K before breakfast is beyond most of us!:pGt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Thanks for that clarification I get it completely now. I've obviously missed quite a few fartlek sessions so really need to get back into it. I was doing a mile fast pace anyway just my recovery was a LOT longer than 1 minI'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change And breakaway. I'll take a risk, take a chance, make a change and breakaway ....

I agree with you Hypno - they amaze me.
Having said that when I did the 5K race at 9am last Saturday it didnt seem like the body particularly minded.
Which was a relief because I'm probably going to have to join these brave souls for the next couple of weeks and get runs in at 6/7 am. Will I survive to tell the tale?:pGt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j
