We're talking about ways to run long runs in terms of getting the best time - since its impossible to run at exactly the same speed for 10 or more miles - there are going to be points at which you are tired etc...

So negative splits are ways around this, but as Rich says they only measured as negative against miles of equal effort, whereas hills require more effort so the time may not be negative from last mile but the effort is much higher so it still counts as a negative split...

Um thats probably not any clearer...
  • My big toe feels like it needs to 'click' into place...should I run on it today?
Booked to go for trial at the gym tomorrow for circuit training.

Another question-at this gym, they have trained to do a 5k (Race for Life) doing 1 min jog/1 min walk? Is that worth my starting with?

Hi Bun! not to sure where all the otehr runners have gone so i will attempt to answer this one for you.

re the big toe, If it is painful then no, don't run. If it is just feeling clicky and no actual pain then head out and see how it feels on the way round. as your body adjusts to the exercise that you are doing then it can feel achey and strange in all manner of places at all manner of times and is the muscles adjusting to the different exercise it is doing.

Re the run at the gym, personally I don't like running to time as it can feel restrictive. How does running for one minute feel to you at the moment? if easy then start off running for 1m 30 and walking for 1min and increase it as you go. You may find that breaking your pace will make it harder for you to get going again (I hate it if i break my pace for any reason) in which case starting off with a short run where you run all the way, even 400 yards around the block and build up from there may be more suited to you.
Running isn't a one size fits all activity and gyms can sometimes forget that. what do you think would work for you? how are you feeling when you are out running at the moment?

    Hope that may help

  • Thanks hun,
I've decided that I am going torest today-I have run (ha!) 3 times this week and for a very beginner, I think that this is good-I am feeling aches all over today, knee, toe etc and I think if I went out and had a 'crap' run it might affect my confidence-I am going to go to the gym tomorrow and then run on Monday/Wed/Fri next week. Gym, Tues/Thurs if I can manage it, or maybe just one day, then Sat will be Gym again.

Ah, I hope that this works-I am one of those people that likes to 'see' results...

rest today but make sure you stretch!! get a cuppa and a book, sit on your lounge floor with your legs as far apart as you can stretch them and hold it there while you drink your tea will soon make you feel looser again. x

Went for a run this afternoon. Did 10miles, even though my plan said I should do 12 :o . Oh well, sometimes I just don't have enough time. Anyway, I did the same route as 2 weeks ago, when I did 1:38:30. This time I did 1:34:26 so I am very pleased with my progress so far. Sorry I haven't been keeping religiously to plan Rich, but sometime life just gets in the way. On Thursday I couldn't run because I was at a 'do'. Went to work at usual time 8.45am and went straight to the 'do' (business awards - very boring) after getting changed at work. Got home 11.30pm. OK, I could have done a Becky and run in the morning, but I don't want to meet myself coming back!

Anyway, excuses out of the way, the highlight of today's run -- I found £5 on the pavement! :T . DS gets so embarassed if I pick up money from the pavement (calls me a penny-picker) but hey £5 is £5. I don't care TBH, I'll pick up anything! I wasn't in a good mood when I went out as DS wouldn't clean out his guinea pigs so I had to shout at him. I feel much better now, £5 richer, an marked improvement on my time, a couple of glasses of vino and a whole lot of endorphins (way hay ;) ).

    .

Excellent progress - I can feel that target getting a little closer each week.

And a plan is not there to be religiously followed, so don't worry. Its a guide to direct your efforts - as long as you achieve the general thrust of the key components, which you are doing, you'll achieve what you want.

    Well done.

oh Chick you lucky lucky thing finding a fiver! Every penny counts is what I say!
Rich another good run there, how far are you running on your long run tomorrow??
Im a bit scared about my 12 miles tomorrow. The last time I did a long run was 3 weeks ago and it was only 10 miles so I think I might struggle. Mind you I have to go out there with a positive mind that I CAN do it.
I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change And breakaway. I'll take a risk, take a chance, make a change and breakaway ....
