Friday nights doing stuff? Whatever next?

Oooo good questions, you've been thinking this thing trough.

    1. Not something that is as much of a problem as you would think. If you're in a starting slot of less than about 3-30 you'll pretty much get running straight away, albeit a bit of a shuffle at the beginning but you'll be running freely within quarter of a mile. There's no need to fight through crowds of runners because a slowish first mile is just what the doctor ordered anyway. At the very back it takes about 20 minutes to clear the start line.

    2. Ooo, already done that one!

    3. Sit ups are good to help your knee lift and give you a toned stomach, so doing some is a good move - about 20 per day gets a reasonable result. Press ups are a nightmare, nobody likes them but 10-20 per day will help prevent your arms and shoulders feel like they're dropping off towards the end of a marathon.

    Other coachie advice? Well there's:
    1. Stop gorging on chocolate when you think nobody's looking!;)
    2. Get a watch!
    3. In the LM follow the blue line once you can find it!
    4. Try and create some space for yourself before a drinks station, once you get there its too late and can get very messy. And after the drinks station be very careful on all the discarded wet bottles and cups - of course the faster you are the less of a problem this is!

    Is that enough?

Okey dokey - good news about the start :D and I will watch out for the drink stations...

Um considering the amount of fat I burn in a week - I dont care about one chocolate bar and I refuse to feel guilty :D, it was awfully good too - a green and blacks white bar mmmmmmmmmm

Watch is the first thing I will buy when I get paid on 25th! I have £25 to last till then...

The blue line is the 26.2 miles mapped out I'm guessing?

Also am I allowed to have my raisins on the run?? And do they let you have mp3 players?? - I've never run a race so sorry if these are silly q's!!

Will start with sit ups and press ups tomorrow! One of my housemates has weights as well which he said I could use if I wanted too - I might give those a go when the press ups become easy (:p).

    OK, back from my run.........

I did my 3.8 miles but it is actually 3.73miles according to my garmin. I have been trying to get under 40 mins for the last few weeks, and I finally did it:

    38 mins 40 seconds which is 10:23 per mile...........:j

BUT, it was hard work and my HR was 169 according to the Garmin which sounds ridiculously high! Starting HR was 70-74.

So......am I going ok, or am I trying to run before I can walk and should I go back to my 11 min miles I seem to be so good at?

Well done Hypno, all improvement is good news.

In general terms, to get most improvement the majority of runs should be done at equal 'perceived effort'. In other words its not a case of trying harder to force improvement, more keep the efforts equal and let the improvement happen.

Data such as heart rates and times are for recording, not for running against, if that makes sense.

Running too hard on a regular basis will slow down improvement by:
    a) Maintaining excess fat
    b) Inflicting too much damage on muscles/tendons/ligaments

    So easy does it....

Thanks rich! I won't be using the HRM all the time, because I don't want to be fixated with numbers, but it is the first time I have ever used one so I had no idea what the end result would be, and therefore no idea if it was good or bad.

I have done two shorter runs this week under 10:30 per mile so that is good to know that I CAN go quicker - but I will be happy with my longer runs to be maintained at the 11 min miles that I have been doing.

I do find it difficult to "regulate" my running - I mean, how do I know if I am setting off at 10 min mile pace or 11 min mile pace, or even more, because at the moment some of the fast runs have a disappointing time, and some of those that I expected to "plod" round, have been much more comfortable and in a better time than I would have guessed!

I never look at my watch until I am safely back home, so don't get caught up in "racing" myself or the time as such.

Ah well, I suppose it will all settle down in the next 5 months 11 days.....

I'm good at that...and is it really only 5 months 11 days eeeks I have soooo much work to do - I still dont feel like a 'proper' runner - when I see all the other runnerly peeps breeze past it makes me feel unwell with nerves about the big day...
  • Well done Hypno :T

I did a 3 mile-ish plod this evening after work, still struggling to get motivated but at least am still getting out there I suppose. Hoping to get a long run in on Sunday.

Yep, my regular diet will have quite a lot of chunky chocolate in it soon - Yorkie with Raisins are my favourite. Its a good way to fill the calorie gap when you're at racing weight.

The blue line is painted on the road and is the shortest route from start to finish - it is painted between 2-4 am on the morning of the race and is being removed as the race progresses - so that when the roads reopen it has gone!

Raisins on the run doesn't sound like a good idea, or necessary, but I'd be most concerned about causing an upset stomach. If you knew you could handle them on long runs they may do no harm. MP3s - I don't see why not, but you have to be aware of dangerous traffic, particularly wheelchairs on downhill sections.

Oh, another thing is when you do a Paula in the tunnel make sure there's no TV cameras around!

They are great for sugar though...I usually snack on them in my longer runs...maybe its just me!

Mmmm yorkie - I refuse to buy them now with that ridiculous sexist slogan - grrrr

So can I claim to be a racing weight already then and eat lots of choccie??
