BA you amaze me!! that is a fantastic run you should feel really proud! must be nice to get off tarmac occasionally and go for something different. really annoyed i wasn't feeling well today as had my heart set on extending the distance, and don't worry that amount was from 11am and had the migraleve about an hour ago!!
I'll join the pasta appreciation society also if ok. OH lives off the dtuff mainly cos it's what is left in the cupboard! Thank god for payday tomorrow!!
Read somewher you are only meant to have a wheat product once per day to avoid putting on weight, err does that count against cereal for breakfast sarnies for lunch, and pasta for tea then, hmmm think i've just spotted where i'm going wrong!!
brilliant for the PB also FMOW!! good for you!!debt @05/11/11 £12210.63!! slowly chipping away!!:heart2:impossible is nothing.:heart2:0 -
Hi P - thank the lord you didn't take all those tablets at once  must have been some headache - was it alcohol induced?
I don't think I am amazing, it is simply that I have got to do the North Run and I am completely cacking it about not being able to run anywhere near that distance. I also feel a bit pressured as I am running to raise money for my friend and she and her family are coming to watch us in the raise - so I'd like to cross the line (i) alive (ii) within 3 hours (iii) looking slightly attractive incase there are cameras there :rotfl:
Hmmmm, are ou having too much wheat - yes :rotfl:
Off to bed now to read Harry Potter which I never got round to :rolleyes:0 -

Yes, i would also like to do sub-60mins so that is definatley a goal for next time. Todays 62mins was my first race of the year and a PB for me (i did 2 10Ks last yr in over 70mins so slowly improving).
It was the first time i ran with someone else. My friend is fitter than me but we work well together as a team. For the first 6K i took the lead, weaving in and out of people and planning our route if you know what i mean (for those who have never raced, its very hard when the roads are narrow and theres a big crowd of people all around you. very annoying when even though the race organisers try to get people to line up as runners, joggers or walkers, some people blatantly want to just start at the front and then stop to walk 1/2km in and cause problems for the rest of us  ).
Anyway, for the first half i had enough spring in my step to effectivly work our way through the crowds. Then at about 6-7Km i was getting tired and slowing down so my friend took the lead. That was nice cos i could just get my head down and concentrate on staying on his shoulder. He could have pushed faster in the last 2-3Km but he concentrated on staying near enough for me to keep up but far enough to stop me slowing too much.
I was already 99% sure about this, but i have learned today that my times are certainly limited by my head, not my body. Running with someone else definately helped in that department. I almost feel like i got bored after 30-40mins. I don't seem to have the mental capacity for the final push for the last 2km or so - my mate helped by speeding up so i had to keep up, but even so i know i struggled. I wasn't particularly out of breath, legs felt a bit heavy but nothing physically wrong or exhausted - definatly a mental block.
So i have knocked 10mins off previous times by having someone to prevent me (mentally) giving in and slowing right down. Not sure what i can do to help myself in that situation when i'm on my own. I thought maybe taking ipod and putting that on about halfway round might help give me a boost. Also i guess training on longer runs would help. Any suggestions?
As for advice to others - just go for it!! Pick a nice race with a fundraising aim and the atmospere is great. Plenty crowds to cheer you along. There will ALWAYS be someone slower than you so don't worry about looking daft. Nice family atmospere is good too - OH and 2 of my stepDs were waiting to cheer us on the final stretch and seeing their proud faces makes it even nicer.
Longer training runs will help but also speed work
What I think will help you is a fartlek. This is Swedish for speed play. Emphasis is on the word play because you can and should make it fun as opposed to some of the more formal speed work sessions.
Pick a route - I dont know lets say 5 -10k. Run it at a steady pace but put in some faster work at different places. For example half way through do some strides from one lamp post to the next and then relax to the next lamp post and repeat 6-10 times according to your fitness. If there are no obvious markers count out say 200 steps.
Another time you may decide to run at an easy-steady pace but run say the 5th and 8th Kilometre at a good 10 or even 5 kilometre race pace.
If it is a hilly route you could really attack the uphills whilst running the rest at an easier pace.
Just have fun with it. There are no end of possibilities of varying this. This is intended to get you used to varying your pace and to put extra in when necessary. I know what it is like to settle into a pace and want to give more towards the end but your legs dont seem to want to know.
Try it and let us know how it works for you

Hi all
Well done FMYOW and evab, great run by the sounds of it.
Well I really had to push myself to get out of bed at 0645hrs on Sunday to meet the others at 0730hrs, it was absolutely chucking it down and windy. Anyway we all met up and ran the 10 miles, through the woods, fields, on road rivers and all, it was more like hasing than running, took su 1-35m, so was quite pleased considering the weather. Aching a lot today so will be resting and having some pasta for lunch.
All you runners are doing fantastic, keep up the good work, BA - Hows those thighs - hee hee:rolleyes:

Afternoon all.. great to hear about others' experiences and tips for races.. and that there's hope for the trousers getting less tight
Continuing my laziness today, buses to and from work as the weather is horrendous.. will definitely try and run tomorrow though (and do all the other stuff I was meant to do on the way to work, like post eBay stuff which is already a bit late). Fell asleep in front of the TV last night then woke up about midnight and couldn't get back to sleep for ages so I'm a bit fuzzy headed today, not helped by coming into work and going straight into a long meeting - but on the good side, I came out of meeting having been given some more interesting and involved projects to do, which is a real boost for me as I'd been feeling quite bored and unappreciated recently!
Anyway, have a good day!Debt@16.12.09 £10,362.38, now debt free as of 29.02.2012."I cannot make my days longer so I strive to make them better."0 -
I have taken my own advise!
In preparation for the big hill of the Hampstead 10k on Sunday, today I ran a steady 5-6 miles. Except I attacked the hills.
I view this sort of workout as a modified speed session. It does the same job but because the pace is controlled by the gradient, you are less susceptible to injury. I always take care on the downhill as this is where injury is more likely to occur it the momentum isn't kept under control.“The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation but your thoughts about it.” Eckhart Tolle0 -
Hi all, Just found out I got 68mins for the 10km yesterday not bad and definitely inspiration to keep going!0
