Well I think I'll stay well clear then!!!
Thanks for the kind words Sally and Snaggles. I always feel so 'out of place' at public runs because everyone else seems so much more suitable so it's nice to think that it may all be in the head!
I must confess I use a personal trainer and find the benefits are great so go for it Sammy. The only warning I would say is that it becomes addictive. Mind you it's the best £ I spend on exercise. I tend to do circuit / weight style training with him as this is not something I can do on my own, haven't got a clue! :rotfl:
Mind you, he was convinced that I was a more capable runner than I am and took me out running on a 5K route outside. My best time for a 5K EVER was 25:42, I was keen to get under 25 one day. He paced me, didn't let me give up and I didn't wear a watch and we got in in 21:42. Ok so I was very nearly sick and even he admitted that it was probably a bit too hard but it did make me realise that I have the strength and speed there just got to get my pacing right. So I say GO FOR IT!!! :T :T

OK, this idea struck me when I saw that there had been 2000 views of the thread in 2 days, which kind of says there's quite a bit of interest.
The bonkers idea is to form a AAA affilliated Road Running Club (not as hard as it sounds) with the following mission statement:
"..to encourage and coach individuals of all levels of fitness and abilities to take-up and participate in road running"
The wording is carefully chosen for a reason I will come on to.
Advantages
1. Everyone would then be an 'affiliated runner' rather than an 'unattached runner' when entering races which usually saves a couple of quid, more in big races.
2. As a club you automatically receive a minimum of 2 guaranteed places in The London Marathon.
3. Main Point - There are grants available , usually £5,000 a time, through AAA, The Lottery Fund, the charity arms of the big banks and one or two other Olympic related funds that are intended to promote active participation in sport. They struggle to give these grants away. The key is to tick all the boxes for what these funds were set up for and, you've guessed it, that mission statement above would nicely tick the boxes.
Funds would have to be spent on coaching and participation and since coaching would be free on here, all funds could be used for participation in the club's league races. These races would be wherever we chose - one in London, one in Bristol, one in Edinburgh whatever.... (you get the idea).
4. Once a club is formed there is no reason not to get sponsorship. Why not MSE? Running in MSE vests is a good form of promotion for the site, especially in the big races. So a form of recurring revenue rather than one-off like the grants.
Requirements
1. Membership - not sure yet, but there will be a minimum number, possibly 25.
2. AAA fees are £50pa club and £5pa individual. Obviously, that £5 more than comes back in reduced race entry fees. And these affiliation fees could be paid out of a grant/sponsorship anyway.
3. We would need a few volunteers - Secretary, Treasurer, Fixtures Secretary, Coach and something else I cant think of at the moment. There wouldn't be a great deal of work involved in any of these (except the coach).
There is no reason why a clubs members have to be in one place or that they have a fixed location, so that's no obstacle.
I can look in to this in a lot more detail but I need to see what interest there would be first. When I was a Teasurer of an Athletics Club the actual mechanics all seemed pretty straightforward. So, the whole purpose would be to get external funding to promote race participation. As I said, it makes sense to me, but....................Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Wow - well found out ROD! :j
I think it is a great idea, I've been keen on being a member of an affiliated club for a while but have been too intimidated to join one so this would be fantastic. I'm happy to help in any way I can.
Also I am doing the 'Big Fun Run' this Sunday (28th) 5KM (subject to hangover).
Is anyone else waiting on hearing about LM09 ballot places - they're out next week aren't they?

Yes waiting with bated breath. Actually I wont be too disappointed if I dont get in as I have done 3 out of the 4. I quite fancy the Edinburgh Marathon, or Paris even“The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation but your thoughts about it.” Eckhart Tolle0 -
Ok so have been out this morning and you know what as enthusiastic as I was it was REALLY hard work. Now I would have said this was down to fitness lost (not according to Rich) so I must still be recovering or just not in the right state of mind (no comments please
)
Think I went off a bit quick ever to prove to myself that I can run faster than plod, legs were absolutely fine but breathing/chest was hard/tight so much to me always continuing (just to prove a point) I decided enough was enough at mile 3.5 and went into a fast walk the remainder of the 5 miles. I would normally have started running again but did listen to coach and continued the walk and took in the nice scenery and gorgeous day out there.
Anyway just had a look at my Nike + (which never seems to be right grrr going to get a garmin when I can afford) and actually I did the 3.5 miles in 34 mins and total 5 miles in 58.23 so not too bad. Although I did my 5k RFL in 28 mins so maybe not
Advice Coach?? Oh and :kisses: thank you so much for my training plan. I will do a seperate post with all my questionsI'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change And breakaway. I'll take a risk, take a chance, make a change and breakaway ....
