I loved it. I was in training for Commonwealth Games but broke my arm and had to give up :(

I got stabbed in the throat a couple times and had some monster bruises, especially when I came up against a couple of german fencers. I also nearly neutered some poor bloke when my ep!e went behind his box... :o

    Jeez!!

Stick to the 'safe' world of running!!:o

Hello Beinerts - havent seen you in a while - whens the big day?

Hi  I think we've missed each other coming on here recently! I expect I'll be getting quieter as my big day approaches. Think of me on the 3rd October at 1pm. Shortly after, I hope to have a Mrs. Beer tins.

Stabbed in the throat? The Germans normally take a medal or two in the fencing, don't they? Don't follow it that closely...

Not running till tomorrow but have 'pole training' tonight for 2 hours. I'm also in the process of getting my Exercise to Music qualification so that I can teach aerobics types classes which is all good fun but is impacting on running as there is only so much I can fit in!

We all know what you're talking about poodle! ;)

You've impressed me again! I didn't realise you'd started fartlekking yet. (Always a useful word to drop into conversations and then leave people to their own devices to find out what it is :p).

Did you see the fartlek post for Sally last night? There's loads of variations that people have tried to structure into fartlek sessions, but my view is they should be as flexible as possible bearing in mind your overall aim.

Your overall aim is to become quicker at distances of 10K to Marathon. So in your fartlek session you want to experience speeds faster than 10K pace. Out and out 100m sprinting is not particularly useful, what you want is sustained bursts at greater than 10K pace. Anything above 10K pace will ultimately convert into improved race pace.

So the answer to your question is YES (Now why couldn't I have just said that in the first place? :p)

Okay will do - I find it hard to do timed things though as I never wear a watch out running (although I use the clock on Big Ben to check my mid point progress)...

So the plan tomorrow is to run a 4 mile with intervals...

I'm only down for 14 miles this week according to my trainning plan...is it okay to do a bit more - I'm in the mood for a long weekend one again maybe get up to 10 miles?

    Thanks for the link Beinerts!

yep -despite a kevlar double collar... Fortunately the button on his sword tip hadn't been damaged else I'd be toast!

Looked like a massive vampire hicky for about a month...:rotfl:

I don't really follow it any more either. I kept seeing people I had walked over taking medals and it got too depressing:rolleyes:

Exactly, no need to time the intervals in a fartlek - just enjoy it!

The intervals should be more of an increase in stride length and a bit more drive from the arms - the speed will be automatic.

As for overall workload, that plan is starting a bit further back than your current level. Not necessarily a bad thing (as you know I promote caution all the way) but it is more normal for weekly mileage to be about three times the long run capability or thereabouts.

So you'd be safe going up to 30mpw at the moment but no need to rush anything.

  • i did a fartlek! - At my running club last week... my trainer person made me do a sprint on the last 50meters, she said it was to prove that at 3 miles i wasn't spent and exhausted, she said she wanted to prove to me that i had somethng left in the tank..... i laughed and said reassuring for emergencies if i should encounter a flasher or some neds i wish to escape from!

so Jinky - RFL in Glasgow for me, you n Lucifa next year.....? a mini scottish meet! you did read in the small print that this club will have social events as well didn't you? Tell the truth that's why you're here innit?!??!

I think I know what you mean, my Dad tried to go from semi-pro to pro football player but his knees weren't up to the extra training. A friend of mine was YTS at Celtic, but an injury (knee again) put him out and he was left on the wayside. It's hard when you've got that "what if" hanging over you.
