Edit: And the little known football club places! I sneaked in one year running for Huddersfield Town in The Football Challenge. Write to Palace and offer to run for them, you get into an exclusive start area with all the stars!!!

    1 year in advance?

From a training point of view, not at all. If you were already undertaking half marathon type training you would only need about 12 weeks to convert to marathon fitness.

If you're talking about getting an entry, then normal entries for the ballot close about August/Sept time. There are several other ways in though - charity places, guaranteed club places, ' good for age' places etc.

Well that gives me more time than I thought. Also I'm quite happy to run under a charity or club ticket. I think a "good for age" entry is unlikely for me, given that I will be a relatively young 33 by April 2010! Best to keep our "club" (if it gets off the ground) entry slots clear for those that can't get in by other means.

I realise I have plenty of time for training though! I'll decide after I've done my first half marathon.

lol I can't believe all the posts are about running this morning. So football and celebrities sneaked in there to get some diversions going!

Aberdeen aren't allowed in though, Maz!

    Indeed he is!

Rich, do you need to be a season ticket holder to get a football club entry? In that case I'll make sure I renew mine for the 09/10 season!

No. They have one place but some clubs just don't know what to do with it. Other clubs have the same backroom staff member running every year. At Town it was Terry Dolan, the ex-pro, who took the place each year but one year he wasn't up to it and they put an advert in the program.

There was about 40 clubs represented when I did it, which presumably means 50+ tickets went begging. So, if you're happy pretending to be a fan of Accrington Stanley I'm sure there are ways and means.......

As long as I don't have to wear a Brighton or Millwall shirt! I might as well write to all or the clubs:

  • That's actually quite interesting Rich ;-)

Go for it Beer Tins.. a few people have expressed the opinion that I'm mad for planning to do a marathon (I think their thinking is that it's a thing for super-fit lifelong athletic type people of which I am not the perfect example) but if god knows how many thousand other people do it every year, then why shouldn't we?

I actually quite like Bristol City - they gave us Marcus Stewart!

I did have a bit of an uncomfortable moment before the start of that football challenge. Queuing for the loos before I had Frank Bruno behind me. I turned round to him and said "I hope you're not trying to push in!".

For a brief moment I think he thought I was being serious. Never have I been so relieved as when I heard that familiar guffaw! Yikes.
