ROFL...is that really a thing? In my case, that's something like 8 minutes slower than I did my first (only) half marathon...and would mean running 5:30 miles the whole way - faster than my sprint finishes at the moment...

Still, I guess "If you don't have a dream...how can you expect to have a dream come tru-U-ue"

LOL I almost heard a tune coming out of the keyboard there.

Well, I do have all the notes stored away on how to get to that level of fitness, but I'm not ready to put my neck on the chopping block yet.

I missed by 12 minutes (2-48@36) last time I felt up to it, but this idea of getting an extra minute each year has started me thinking may be the optimum age is somewhere in the early forties.

  • Morning running people! Yes, I am a bit stiff, mainly in the shoulders for some reason! Agree about the slowing down bit, I find it easier to get going again from a slow jog or very fast power-walk type step than if I slow down too much. Am 'resting' today apart from the walk to/ from work... and working out some running routes as I can see me getting bored very quickly going the same way...

Aww thanks guys...Not that I could even do a half yet, nor am I even considering doing a marathon EVER!

Although...my NY buddy has been talking about his training and I'm so excited for him!

The funny thing is I expected to feel stiff and a bit rubbish, but apart form general cold achiness I'm fine and was yesterday (did the 9 on Saturday)...weird!

Becky, did you set out to do 9 miles or, as I suspect, you aimed to do 7 and just felt so good you carried on?

Becky, you could do a half marathon with the right training (hey, you could probably finish it one way or another now). And you have a marathon in you if you want to do it and are prepared to put in the training, I'm certain of it. I myself am toying with the idea of going for the London marathon in 2010, though I'm some way off the required level of fitness right now. With enough training and practice races in 2009 it's achievable... for you too if you want to.

Yeah okay caught out! I set out to do 7 and to walk the final two, but I got to seven and was running even faster than at the start (it was 4.5 each way on the way back I was soo happy I just went really fast), so I carried on.

I felt dead at 9, but I had a 10 minute walk to get back to my friends house and after that I could have run some more (except I was out of water and it was hot on Sat)...

Anyway, I told my friend it was fine to be out for 1.5-2 hours, so he came back at 1.5 and there I was sat on the doorstep looking rather pleased with myself! Tee hee.

    LOL

    It all adds up.

Basically, even though you went much further than before you were WELL WITHIN your limits. Your body was telling you what it wanted - more running.

Thats why you haven't done much damage and therefore not aching much. Your collapse point will be around 12 miles as things stand if most of your runs are 4+.

You are a little bit naughty though running with a cold. Colds, and especially chest coughs, should mean nothing more than very light training if at all.

    You're fitter than you think!

This is a new ambition isn't it? - released without much fanfare and fireworks!

Hey, it's a long time away and I haven't made up my mind 100%, though I need to decide about 1 year in advance, don't I?

    1 year in advance?

From a training point of view, not at all. If you were already undertaking half marathon type training you would only need about 12 weeks to convert to marathon fitness.

If you're talking about getting an entry, then normal entries for the ballot close about August/Sept time. There are several other ways in though - charity places, guaranteed club places, ' good for age' places etc.

Edit: And the little known football club places! I sneaked in one year running for Huddersfield Town in The Football Challenge. Write to Palace and offer to run for them, you get into an exclusive start area with all the stars!!!
