I'm back from my 2.5, very hot and sunny here today, so need a cuppa.

Idio, which Garmin have you got?
I'm just having a look at the features of the 405, I'll have a look at the others in a minute.
Tbh the GPS is pointless to me, a solution without a problem, but I can see how it would have its uses for people who regularly run on strange courses.
The automatic download of heart rate data for interval sessions is the stuff that would save me a lot of recording and analysis. I was just wondering how reliable the wireless data transfer is?Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

I've got a 205, so sadly can't advise too much on the heart rate stuff - it doesn't have it....the 305 does, though...
I can, however, advise on the GPS thing - there are a lot of things it's good for, knowing where you're going is actually the least of them:
1) knowing where you've been...I log all my runs/cycles on mapmyrun, so the amount of time this saves me vs entering them manually is just massive.
2) knowing how fast you're going at any moment, how far you've been on a given run etc - mine beeps every mile, shows you the pace for that mile, keeps you on target in longer runs.
3) helping you train - you can do a route multiple times and have a "ghost" of your previous time on the gps - so you can see whether you're ahead or behind...great for getting your speed down and pushing yourself.
Generally, the garmin package is pretty good, the automatic synch works every time I plug it in and there's a bunch of different programs that can read the data out of it...I paid £70 for my 205 (display model) - but you can look at my thread for a trick someone's used to get a cheap 305 if you've got good banter:

Ah, thanks for that!
That would appear to be a lot more useful than first envisaged. I record a whole host of data and tend to memorise all the intermediate splits for comparison between runs. The ghosting of runs sounds cool though - I keep to just 3 loops for all runs so that there is lots of comparable data rather than just random - ghosting would be a very useful tool for me.
Right, more research.....
Many thanks.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

in other running related news, less geeky than the boys....
i bought myself a nice Tshirt today... £15
Unisex fit (women should order a size down e.g. if Women' s Medium order Unisex Small). Lightweight technical running fabric designed to wick away moisture from the skin
So i ordered XL... and will hope for the best!
Not expensive for what it is, and i need somerthing more specialised now i am a proper runner... well at least until i can get my supertoned hardbody into a vest/bra top and go running in pants and long socks like my mate Paula (Radcliffe in case you're not keeping up!)I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....(it's part of my charm!)0 -

Who are you calling a geek?
Were you feeling left out with everyone going out buying goodies galore the other day?
(I wonder if Becky is going to post piccies of the nurse's uniform? (Behave Rich!))
You really shouldn't have bought anything with 'XL' on though. Have you not seen the news?Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

These "wicking" tees really are worth their weight in gold, you're so much more comfortable than when you've got a horrid cotton teeshirt clinging to you the whole way round...0

I am looking forward to feeling the benefits of the scientific fabric! whatever that means!!!
Rich - who said anything about Becks in a nurses uniform....? bunny girl outfit i heard, and doing the splits while drinking champers, but not nurses outfits? - (So i can see the attraction on your part...)
However it's not unlike me to miss clues, so i'll take your word for it....
...............or maybe it was, erm what is it called again, erm, oh yeah, in your dreams!!:pI'm just a seething mass of contradictions....(it's part of my charm!)0
