Wow there's lots to read in here, 68 pages!! Just found you by chance and am looking for some advice. I am running (!) a half marathon with a friend in January at DisneyWorld Florida. I have been doing some light training and expect to be a jogger/walker. Don't laugh but I have no clue what to wear at all, tops or bottoms. I hate the thought of running in shorts!! I know I need a running shoe but what would you guys recommend. Thanks for reading.

    Hi Boom,

I tend to run in my football (soccer if you're American) training trousers - which are 3/4 length and very light, but they have a wind layer in and arent skin tight like most running clothes (ur why would you want that anyway?!?), they are also great when it rains!

Can I come and go on the rides while you're running? :rotfl:

Good luck with the training :D

Idio - I take it you're up for joining the club? (see post 2642). We could do with some more male representation!

I'll get your 10k on the list.

I run in a pair of cropped leggings unless tis really freezing (mine were from Asda, £12 and have lasted me aaages....

if you are comfortable then a fitted sports vest gives extra support and are usually breathable... otherwise just a big t shirt and a sports bra will be fine...

as squizzer says, make sure you have trained in whatever you're wearing to avoid chaffing!!

TRainers wise... i'm a new balance girl, but everyone is different so probably worth getting assessed at local running shops, then buying some sorbothane insoles off them and looking for your trainer type online!! sorbothane insoles are apparently very useful in staving off injuries... i'll post Rich's thoughts on them when i find the right post.......

Considering the looks I get my running shoe buying process must be weird. (but at least this is a post relating to money saving - MSE Martin will be pleased )

    So this is it:

    1. Go to largest sportsshoes retailer in the world (their description). (But why is it always empty?)

    2. Go directly to 'Sales' section. (No passing Go and all that guff)

    3. Quick scan of boxes eliminating anything with price tag over £30.

    4. Select cheapest pair that comes in size 10. (Hopefully £10-£15)

    5. Try on.

    6. If comfy (which they always are), buy.

    7. While sales assistant is ringing purchase through (and suggesting I might like a gait analysis, supinate, pronate blah bla blah) take shoes out of box and whip out insoles (I hate those that are glued in). Ask if bin handy and throw away insoles.

    8. Put Sorbothane in.

    9. Away I go. All done in as little as 2minutes (5 max).

Because the place is usually empty theres generally 4 young kids looking at me as though I'm a clueless imbecile ( I am, but thats not the point).

Its not as though shoes have an endorphin rating - I might take a bit longer if that was the case.

I've never had sore knees, ankle problems, hip problems etc so since I've done this at least twice a year for 25 years since I was 17 there can't be that much wrong with it.

So, what exactly is so weird about what I do? (Don't worry you won't hurt my feelings :o)
I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....

Its getting a little confusing for my limited brain capabilities to keep track of who's planning to do what in terms of races. And since the number of people seems to be expanding like an American's waistline I think it is probably a good idea to keep a running schedule with outline plans and then, as specific races are entered, updated accordingly. So far:

    2008
Sept 14th Bristol 1/2 Marathon Sally
    Sept 21st Swansea 10k Idiophreak
Sept 28th Hampton Court 10k Angela

    Novemb 5k race (TBA) Redsquizzer

    2009
    Jan/Feb 10k race (TBA) Redsquizzer

Mar/Apr 1/2 marathon race (TBA) Redsquizzer

    31/5/09 Edinburgh Marathon Redsquizzer

Aug Marathon race (TBA) Rich (Steve)

Oct Great North Run Rich (Steve)

Now everyone has got some sort of plan, however vague, so lets get them all in one place and keep the list updated and then we know what we've got to look forward to! So come on, throw your plans at me.........

Hey Rich can't believe you haven't put my planned race down Doh:p is it becouse I do very very very slow running/walk, it is the 1st thing in my sig you know:eek:

  • Hi Boomdocker - I think the most important thing is to run in what you're comfortable in. How about leggings if you don't want to wear shorts? Whatever you wear make sure you've trained in it and it doesn't rub anywhere! If you're female you definitely want to check out the sports bra advice a couple of pages ago! As for shoes, it's worth going to a running shop to get an assessment - even if you go on to buy them cheaper elsewhere ;) I know a few people on here highly recommend the New Balance trainers, I haven't tried them myself.

Not much to say on women's clothing but I can say that new runners never, ever use enough vaseline.

Stick it everywhere, anywhere that could potentially rub - feet, inner thighs, nipples (I'm not joking!), armpits, in your ears if you must but don't skimp on the vaseline!

I'm way too flakey to be given any kinda responsibility, but I'm certainly up for the idea - and *love* the idea of running in MSE tops :)
