    Hi all

I've just read through this thread and I am sooo impressed with you all! :) You're doing fab :)

I ran for a while a few years ago before getting pregnant with my son, and would really like to get back into it. I can't afford new trainers, but have some decent ones still. however, I am scared of hurting my back again as I did it in by overdoing it at the gym in feb and am worried about doing it again.

Has anyone any hints of what I could start off doing in order to protect my back so tht I can start running again? I didn't like running at first, but it didn't half tone my wobbly bits after a while :)

    Hi Sea

I read recently that if you start off easy walk/jog/run and build it up you avoid injuries esp to back - I'm sure it was in running world in the injury section? I would walk for a min and run for 2 mins or something like that until you get your stamina and confidence up.

Also make sure your shoes are ok for you to run in. I had a sore back and knees and went to a proper running shop and the difference was amazing. I had been going out with my knees, legs, head (:rotfl: ) wrapped in support bandages and didn't need them once I got some proper trainers.

I would say start off easy and go at your own pace.

    Good luck :T

 yep BA they sound JUST the same. MEN!!!!!

Mine refuses point blank to run on anyday other than a saturday or tuesday when it's the length of the cricket pitch!!

Sea, I have a bad back hon and 4 years ago was told not to run due to the impact. But you can do it. This may sound bizarre but make sure you don't do any warm up exercises that involve twisting your spine before you run,
You may experience a burning sensation around the bad area the first couple of times but this is the muscles stabilising the spine and should wear off the more you run. you'll probably find that the running aleviates the stiffness and pain after a while. Good luck!!!;)

Thanks :) Now need to build up to actually starting it! Hmmm..should I do early morning or night time? What does everyone find easier (I've noticed people do both on here) I used to do mine in the evening, but it does eat into family/housework/marking/mse time!!

    Hi again

I have decided to do some in the morning and some in the evening to balance it out, although my plan for tomorrow morning now looks out - waiting on a call to a Police Station, could be an all nighter  - so probably evening run for me tomorrow now :(

Maybe start with two runs a week either one in morning and one in evening, or two when kids are in bed? Have to say morning runs give me a real buzz and a fab start to the day, it's nice and quiet as well.

    Hi,
I haven't been posting for a while (well you can tell from my signature!)

I started running "properly" about 3 months ago. I always found it really difficult until I came across a training schedule called the couch to 5K (C25K)

You can find it by googling - "running forum". Click on the first one at the top then click on training. Scroll down to the C25K. It works!! I can now run for 30 mins (after 9 weeks) but struggled to run for 60 seconds before I began.

Good luck everyone! Running is fab!

Morning all. I ran this morning - 1.5 miles in 17 minutes, same as Sunday, my mini target is to get this below 15 minutes. Also I alternated running and walking three times, which is an improvement on five last time.

I went out at 6.45 and was surprised how many people were about. I had to keep stopping or stepping into the road to get round them. I much preferred the time I went out at at 5 am and met noone - I felt like the only person in a newly created world.

I'm a bit disturbed at people's comments about trainers. Mine are really old and were fashion cheapies when I bought them. There's no way I can afford new ones, especially not for £70. Someone tell me it doesn't make a difference at my newbie level, please!

seaxwyn no it doesn't make a difference at all. So long as the trainers you are in are comfortable and you don't feel any Strain in your knees or muscles then you're fine.
Welldone for taking this on so readily! you'll be running the full distance in no time!!
