Maz thats brilliant that Erin is keen to come out with you and the more she does it the more ingrained it will become as part of her life. Get you Mrs 30 mins non stop...:) Well done..so whats your next race/distance?

Well I went out this morning and thought I would try and do a timed race 5k (in preparation for the RFL) came in at 30.02..dam those 2 seconds! So my aim is to do RFL in 28 mins....although a friend said last night that the course is REALLY REALLY hilly.
I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change And breakaway. I'll take a risk, take a chance, make a change and breakaway ....
    Finally Debt Free...

Ia - What's an SPD? is that baby related spongy hips or something?
    Nicked from Ivillage.com
    Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD)

    What is Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction?
The symphysis pubis is the name given to where two bones meet at the front of the pelvis. The pelvic bone is roughly in the shape of a heart, and is actually formed by three bones, which are held together by very strong ligaments.
The bones meet to form three 'fixed' joints - at the front (the symphysis pubis) and at each side of the bottom of the spine (the sacro-iliac joints).
Normally, these joints are not designed to allow movement. However, when a woman becomes pregnant, a hormone called relaxin is produced which loosens all the pelvic ligaments in order to allow the pelvis slight movement at the time of birth.
For some reason, the ligaments occasionally loosen too much and too early before birth. This means they can't keep the pelvic joints stable so the pelvis moves, especially on weight bearing. All this is made worse by the increased weight of the growing baby and sometimes the symphysis pubis joint actually separates slightly. The result is mild to severe pain, usually in the pubic area, and is called SPD.
    What are the symptoms?
The most common is pain and difficulty when walking. Some women describe the feeling of their pelvis coming apart. The pain is made worse when turning in bed or doing something that involves standing on one leg, such as climbing up stairs, getting dressed and getting in and out of a car. The pain is generally felt in the pubis and/or the sacro-iliac joints, but can also be experienced in the groin, the inner side of the thighs, the hips and in one or both buttocks.

Thanks for the medical lesson IA... i hate not knowing what people are talking about. must've been a nightmare when you were pregnant.

do you take any supplements or anything for it?

I've started taking a multi vitamin and a cod liver oil since running again, not sure if it's helped my joints or not, but it's made my hair and nails shiny and strong!!

Sally, you are pretty fast y'know. you came on here kidding on you were not a runner, but you were weren't you!?!!

I'm sticking with 5k training plan for now. well actually will do 30minutes which equates to 2 miles at my pace twice a week and try for a longer distance at weekends... i.e. 3miles, 40-45 minutes.

anymore than that and it will start to be a chore, and i want to enjoy the running for a while without pressure.... altho i do miss the focus of the race already.... so swings and roundabouts.

Apparently there's nothing that can help it as it's caused by the hormone that's released when you're pregnant. It usually goes away after the baby is born but sometimes you get a bit of niggling if you overdo it and I think that's just to do with the fact your joints were under so much pressure from it when you WERE pregnant. Who knows. Either way my hip's ok today. :)

I can't really offer much advice except that i seem to get better after a while, so breathing carp for first 10minutes, then evens out... and seems to maintain okay after that. i.e. it doesn't get any worse, maybe a bit better!!

Mentally keeping going until you get past that point is the hardest part..

on a medical note - maybe worth checking out you're not asthmatic so you can get on an inhaler as well, as my friend only really uses hers after runs (or if she has cold/flu), not in day to day life.

Cnoelj (marathon runner and regualr poster on here) gave me some good advice re breathing technique, i'll see if i can find the post and add it in.

Right breathing - I am going to set you an exercise.

Start by observing your breathing at different times of the day. When you are relaxed and also when you are less relaxed. Most of us dont breath correctly most of the time. The less relaxed are the more likely we do it wrongly. Are you breathing from the bottom of your lungs rather than the top. Your stomach should be expanding as you breathe in and contracting as you breathe out. In other words it should not be your chest moving. Concentrate on exhaling, pulling your stomach in as you do so. If you are breathing out you will breathe out automatically.

If you practice this when you are not running it will be much easier then to do it when you are

    Here it is!
