Thanks I've never been excited about exercise before but I think I have found my thing, am absolutely loving running...(guess I might not be saying that when its cold and pouring with rain)
Think I will have to invest in some new trainers though as mine are hurting my feet and making them ache when I run
I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change And breakaway. I'll take a risk, take a chance, make a change and breakaway ....

Well done Sally for getting going!
Definitely invest in new trainers if your feet are hurting, I got some recently and the difference is amazing.
Have done 5 miles this morning on the way to work - worked out a long way round to get there. 16 miles to do this weekend, quite looking forward to it, I just hope we don't get any more snow!!Debt@16.12.09 £10,362.38, now debt free as of 29.02.2012."I cannot make my days longer so I strive to make them better."0 -
Did my 10 min run last night, I know it doesn't seem much at the moment but distance wise its 1.1 miles. I have to say im sticking to the 6 week training plan I found for doing a 5k race and then I can build on that once I can run the 5k. Maz how was your walk/jog last night?
Hiya!! Thanks for asking Sally and well done on your miler!!!! is a 10 minute mile not pretty fast!?!?!Wow!
My training last night was okay, we did run a minute/walk a minute x 10 and it wasn't too bad until about set 7 when i got a stitch but i was made by my running buddy to run thru it and i did. :j
It was hard but not as bad as i'd feared altho we didn't cover anything like our normal distance.
I'm having pain at side of the ankles/lower calves. I need new shoes as the ones i'm wearing are the ones i trained in for last 5ks and the 10k so have probably done too many miles in them now....
Can someone explain to me the different types of foot fall (or whatever the term is.)
i.e. how would i know if i need a neutral or overpronator shoe? And what do those terms mean? I really don't have time to get to a shop to get assessed for this, plus i don't want to buy my shoes there, i'm looking online at M&M sports. (+Quidco cashback!)
Redsquirrel, well done on the long walk today!!I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....(it's part of my charm!)0 -
To pronate is to strike the ground toe or ball of the foot first. Overpronating and underpronating refers to the extent that you do this. If you were underpronating you are likely to be striking the ground heel first. If you possibly can I would get the assesment. It should not take more than a couple of minutes. It may well also reveal any rolling of the foot as well, whereby you stike the ground first with one side of the foot before shifting the balance to the other. If this is the case you would need the appropriate cushioning for that as well. I suppose once you have had an assessment, you could ask it to be written down for you and then you could use this next time you buy shoes.Hiya!! You can find some good deals in the running shops. Half price sales and the like. There are also discounts for members of affiliated running clubs.“The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation but your thoughts about it.” Eckhart Tolle0 -

Well done you and also for running through the stitch. Thats one thing that really gets me, I can't eat before I run otherwise I do get stitch but sometimes feel like I will pass out so not sure what the answer is?
I think I will have to go and get the assessment although I do have a physio friend who knows about these things, maybe she could tell me what I am??I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change And breakaway. I'll take a risk, take a chance, make a change and breakaway ....

I think it is worth it and it will not cost you anything. I never thought about asking a physio before. You would have thought that they should be better qualified to do this than the staff in the shops, although they may employ suitably qualified people to do the job. I was looking at some stuff yesterday about the 'wet footprint test' where you can tell what sort of shoes you need from how your footprint looks (i.e. which parts touch the ground). But if you can get the assessment free probably best to do that - I'm definitely going to when I get my next pair of trainers.Debt@16.12.09 £10,362.38, now debt free as of 29.02.2012."I cannot make my days longer so I strive to make them better."0

Yay managed to get my application sorted and its gone through ok, so no need for me to do it again on Monday as I have one of the 80,000 ballot places.
What does concern me in them opening it up for ballot so early and right after the 2008 race, is that loads of people will apply who have done it on the spur of the moment. Im sure there will be lots of genuine runners who don't even get a ballot place. Why not leave it for 3 months and then do it?I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change And breakaway. you're right Cnoelj, it makes sense to get assessed properly. I think i may roll outwards as the pain is in the outer ankle calf area and when i roll/tilt my ankle it mimics the pain........ so might make sense...
There isn't a running shop local to me, it would mean trip to the big city and i tend not to go there.... i suppose i can ask for info and kid on i'm coming back to buy them, i guess they get that a lot.
If i time it to payday and i get a bargain then i should go for it and support the running shops....
Yeah, you're right, i need to get it sorted out properly! and i'll take advice from experts like you anytime!!!!!!!!
Sal, well done on the marathon place. I'm guessing they will oversubscribe as so many fall away during the year so they end up with the right number of applicants.I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....(it's part of my charm!)0 -
Hi Sally, could you share details of your six week training plan? I'd be really interested to see it.Total debt: 1 January 2007 £[strike]49,387.79[/strike] 1 January 2012 £[STRIKE]19,312.85[/STRIKE] 1 August 2012 £11,517.620
