  • Hi everyone - well done on getting back out there SW. I have done a lonely 6 miler tonight, hate running on my own but I know I need to do it so shoved the ipod on and thought of the rolos waiting for me in the fridge :D

Have spoken to a running club and when I pluck up the courage will go and join them to see how I get on, might have to be a New Years Resolution.

Joining a running club was one of the best things I have done BA. I had images that people would be incredibly serious and intense. Nothing was further from the truth. They are ordinary people like you and I, who enjoy running and encourage each other to get as much out of it as possible. You will find that there are people more experienced than you, who you can learn from, but equally there will be those who will take inspiration from you. I have made some great friends.

  • Thanks for that. I am incredibly incredibly nervous and my friend is going to come along with me for the first time, but it is about a 20 min drive but I have been told it is good. Apparently it is lap training in winter which I'm not overly keen on, but they also meet up for weekend runs.

I will take your advice though and take the plunge - very scared though! Do you still run with a running club, how often etc?

I dont go to every session by any means. There are several reasons for that. I work shifts and perhaps I enjoy running by myself more than most. When I am busy I can organise myself to run from home and get everything done and dusted in an hour and a half. A trip to the club is a journey plus it is a social occasion, so it is a whole evening affair. Having said that it is great to have options. The other advantage is that we share cars etc to race venues and it is great to go as a team. Remember as a club member you will get cheaper entry to races and a 10% discount on running gear and accessories. We have social events - barbecues, parties, 10 pin bowling, trip to the dogs, theatre etc. One couple are walkers and arrange rambles/hikes two or three times a year.

I am sure that they will make you welcome and the fact that you are running already means that you are at an advantage. Some people join clubs with no running experience at all. You are likely to be put in a group who are of the same standard / have the same aspirations as yourself.

Just go with the intention to enjoy yourself. As I like to challange myself I tend to run with people who are a bit more experienced than me. If I want an easier session I will drop back and run with another group. Nobody is going to make you do anything you dont want to or not ready to do.

    Evening!

When I lived in Bedford I ran with the running club there, it was fantastic they had different groups, varied the training and gave loads of advice and support. I was far more motivated to keep going and toned up lovely!

    Def recommend.
  • Cheers all!! Think I will definately give it a go and let you know how I get on :)
  • oo just caught up.. a DFW baby-how exciting! Big hugs!
BA have you considered wormens running network..Great for meeting people but in a less threateing way tha a club I am told...I will go again; v.supportive and not competitive! Off to bed as going to godaughters christmas plays tomorrow - v.exciting as they're my surrogate children so I het hugs & to grin like an idiot at what good angels they are!!

  • BA - Go for it, I agree with cnoelj, it was the best thing I did and they are great, you can run in any group you want, obviously being realistic, got loads of new mates and its a good laugh, running improved no end as well.

Good luck, dont make it a NYR do it now

Managed to get out for a run today between the heavy showers. Seemed to be running at a fair pace too.

I am planning to run the New Years Day 10k in Cleethorpes. Not sure when it is though :rotfl: :rotfl:

Seriously this starts just a few hundred yards from my mum's place and I will be visiting over the break anyway. This is a way of tricking the mind into thinking that I am preparing for a 10k rather than a Marathon. I will try and identify a 10 mile and half marathon event over the coming months too.
