    Does the exact definition of a dual carriageway actually matter? The OP said that they were driving on a dual carriageway. And the national speed limit is 70mph.

    Many dual carriageways are subject to speed limits less than national limits.

    So your statement that the OP was on a dual carriageway and the national is 70mph is not true in all cases.
