Homemade hobnobs?

I used Splenda substituting volume for volume of sugar - not weight for weight as Splenda hardly weighs anything. I just weighed the sugar and then put it into a measuring jug, put it back in the storage jar and then used the same volume of splenda. They were okay but had a strange texture. I have, however, discovered Splenda brown sugar, which is half brown sugar and half splenda (or something like that). Anyway, you use half the weight you would otherwise use of sugar and they turn out fab with that!Jane

Hello Twink!
Yes I use splenda when i make mine because I am dieting ( )
They come out really well. I use a mix of Morag's adapted low fat version of Twinks hobnobs and my own additions
I shall hereby name these Spuggy's version of Morag's version of the Famous Twink Hobnob!
110g of SR Wholemeal Flour
100g Porridge Oats
100g of Marge (I use Asdas Sunflower Spread)
2fl Oz of splenda (you need to use the same volume as sugar for splenda)
1 tbs syrup
2 tbs hot water
1/2 tsp pf bicarb
handful of sultanas
tbs spoon of mixed spice
Melt marge, syrup and water in a pan then add splenda and mix.
whisk in bicarb
Mix in flour, oats, sultanas and mixed spice. Mix well and form into the usual shape.
If you get 30 out of those it works out at 2 weight watchers points per 3 biscs.
Today I'm doing a batch of those for me and I'm going to try original Twinks with macadamia nuts and white choc for a friend. I hope they turn out ok!House saving Targets:

used honey to replace the syrup for the first time this week. I found it made the mix quite runny, so added more oats. Dropped 1tsp for each biccie. they spead out quite a bit and were a little thin, even joined up with others, Not sure if they are a success or not. they taste nice, you can certainly taste the honey, also added a tsp of almond essence. Will keep trying with honey as I bought a jar of the stuff.0

I generally use honey as I don't tend to have syrup in the house, and I've found that for my half batch (4oz each of the dried stuff) I tend to need a good tablespoonful of honey. I wouldn't say it makes the mix runnier (if anything, I tend to increase the liquid slightly as I find it can be a bit dry) but the biscuits do spread out and they're chewier. I use the tablespoon measure from my measuring spoons to scoop out lumps of dough and I generally get about 20 biscuits from a half batch. I only make a half batch as it's just me and OH and if I made a full batch, we'd scoff the lot and end up the size of small planets lol!
It's interesting to read about reducing the sugar - I've been thinking about that as I like to add things to the biscuits (crystallised ginger is a current fave) and sometimes they can be a little too sweet. Next batch I'll drop the sugar down to 3oz and see how it goes.0 -
thanks for the recipe spugzbunny i will give it a go as my dgs1 has diabetes, am sure your recipe is bound to be useful to anyone cutting down on sugar
i hadnt noticed any difference in the mix when i used honey and i bought crystallized ginger the other day but i thought i would rinse off the sugar first maybe in a sieve and pour hot water over before i chopped it up0 -
when shopping in our asda today i noticed Lyles syrup at 38p a tin0

I tride both the full fat original Twinks and the low cal version this weekend - interesting difference! Twink's are all yummy and biscuit like and the spread OUT. The splenda version are more like rock cakes or scones in consistency and puff UP! How wierd!House saving Targets:

thanks for trying out the recipe, did they taste ok?0 -
I usually use half the amount of sugar from Twinks original recipe (so I use 4oz) as my mum is diabetic and I didn't want her missing out so experimented by reducing the sugar by about half an ounce each time until I finally got it down to 4oz. We certainly don't miss the sugar but it is probably down to individual taste. I would certainly say have a go at reducing it bit by bit and I am sure you won't notice any difference. When I make them, they all disappear just as quickly as if I had used 8oz sugar.
It also means I don't feel quite so guilty eating 2 or 3 or even 4 at a time!0 -

thanks for that so that if we are using dried fruit or crystallized ginger we can reduce the sugar0
