No I have nothing to do. I want to know if it is reasonable to pay the granny in addition to buying whatever the father currently buys.

If people say "oh yes, that sounds about right" or "No he does one thing or another" then great. If nobody know for sure don't say anything but I can do without being accused of goodness knows what when all I want is information.

Of course he should be helping with childcare costs, he should be helping with anything his daughter needs, if he doesn't want to contribute to childcare, then he should be providing the care himself.

If you feel you don't want to report her for benefit fraud then why did you bring it up that she is working but claiming she isn't?

Of course it's reasonable for him to pay for his own child's child care, why wouldn't it be?

She told me! She asked if I would be able to watch the child from time to time and I said yes but not all day every day. She said her own mother would but wanted to be paid since was working and claiming and could afford it.

Although the CSA are not involved ( at present) at least the Dad is contributing on his child's needs rather than paying hard cash.. That's not the issue here.

I'm dumbfounded the PWC's mother wants to be paid for looking after her own grandchild.

Incredible. Could the mum provide food and such depending on how long the grandmother has the child? Would it involve a carer coming to Gran's house?

Or does Gran want to be paid for her time?:(

Not everyone can afford to offer free childcare.

Bit of a generalised answer that,G.

Well it depends on the hours, doesn't it? But Gran appears to be greedy as it's her own grandchild we are talking about.

Does this amount come to 15% of his wages? if it does then he is paying enough (as the law states but it is still his child so he could pay more if he wanted to, for the benefit of his child). As I said above he really needs to start paying a set amount each month to make things easier and clearer.

This is immaterial - the law states that a NRP should pay 15% of his income to the PWC. If the NRP chooses to buy anything, that is usually extra.

My ex was taken to court by the CSA for non-payment. He claimed (untruthfully) that he was buying things for the kids and giving them the cash, but it was judged that he had paid nothing since the date gifts, clothes, cash given directly to children, etc don't count as child maintenance. He had to pay the arrears, and as I was on benefits and this was a few years ago, he also had to pay arrears to the secretary of State.

Incidentally, my ex bought an occasional Happy Meal, but that was all. The children's clothes, toys, books, school trips, uniforms, etc are all paid for from the CM and child related benefits that I receive.

OP, is it that granny wants some payment because she will have to give up work to look after her grandchild? I would suggest that the PWC looks for registered childcare as they might get help via tax credits towards paying for childcare, but this case could be different as it is nigh on impossible to find any for disabled children.

Good point. As you have pointed out TC only pay out for reg childcare.

My mother looked after my children otherwise I couldn't have worked -self employed after school hours.

The granny does not work and will not have to give up a job. The child cannot go to a regular child minder because she needs toilet and wheelchair facilities plus an extra rail on the bannisters. I have a downstairs loo so when she is here that is not a problem I also have French doors and a wheelchair fits through. Plus she cannot be pushed over by another child or have any degree of rough and tumble. The council have paid for extra wide doors in the family home and the granny's because she was down for respite care.

Well thanks everyone but £45 a week seems to be a great deal less than the father is spending now.

My mum also looks after my son - I run Rainbows and Brownies once a week and there is virtually no childcare available for a severely disabled child. I don't pay my mum. She wouldn't accept any money if I tried, but I do take her for lunch every so often, and for occasional days out. I'd take her more often if I could afford to.

I would imagine that NO childcare would be able to be claimed, as the PWC (appears) is being looked after by the state as the carer.

So not sure how that would work...

My advice would be that if the PWC is not happy, and the NRP doesn't want to pay, anymore, the only route would be CSA, but as others have said, it is limited to 15% of his income and that has to cover everything, he has NO legal liability after that...

It does all sound strange though, and like the PWC is working the system from what you say, and if she is a friend, then discussing private matters like this on an open forum is probably not such a good idea...!!!
