Just so its clear, I am aware of both licencing laws and the right to refuse to serve.

Like i have said, I've had attempted fraud on my Account numerous times, and an experian search noted an account i didnt know about.

So im very careful with my ID, and will make a judgment call whether to hand it over or not. 99% of the time this isnt a problem.

It started because an assistant tried to snatch my card.

Someone holding your DL for 10 seconds or so is no bigger a fraud risk than them looking at it for 10 seconds.

You are just trying to justify being twisted.

Surely you have more in life to worry about than this? Surely it can't be that boring?

Part of my job is to advise retailers that sell age-restricted products about what they should do to prevent underage sales - including age-verification policies and staff training on how to check ID. We tell retailers that the only effective way to check ID (and ensure it is genuine and not tampered) is to hold it yourself and carry out various checks on the security features that should be present.

We see a lot of tampered/fake ID which wouldn't be picked up if someone just held a card in front of your face but would be obvious if you held it and ran your hand over it, particularly on driver's licences which have tactile security features. Many retailers will also use a UV light to check security features that are built into passports/driver licences/PASS cards.

My advice to retailers is that if someone doesn't want you to hold the ID that may be because it is fake or has been tampered with so you should refuse the sale.

You have a right not to give them your ID to hold, but equally they have every right to refuse to serve you if you refuse.

TBH, I think it's paranoia to claim it's a security risk for a member of staff at a shop to hold your ID for a few seconds to carry out the appropriate checks. You're standing right there, what do you think they're going to do with it? In the highly unlikely situation that they start taking details down or doing something inappropriate then challenge them and get the ID back.

Phew! Back-up at last! I was just about to post that during my staff training at my last few jobs I was told to take the ID and 'feel' it plus look for anomalies.

No problem - If you're ever unsure about anything to do with age-restrictions and want to ask questions feel free to PM me. I'm a bit of a geek about this particular area of law!

Thank you hun - but I am now retired! still - you never know, my OH might have the bright idea of getting me a job in B&Q!

I know what that is like - I had to extensively research the Data Protection Act and Summarise it for one of my bosses in one temp job - and now I am a DPA geek! I know all sorts of interesting little quirks of it! (well, they are interesting to ME!).

Absolutely i do, but your wrong about th risk of fraud, anyone can place a camera strategically, but remembering details takes skill
  • Guest101 , you sound super paranoid. If I were you, I would close all my bank accounts, credit cards, catalogue accounts, get rid of my mobile (whether it is PAYG or contract because they store your card details) Get rid of your computer, Macbook Pro whatever, tell the postman not to step no where near your house and just live off the grid like a hippie!

Do you ever get paranoid when you have to run through DPA over the phone especially with the tax office??!!
