I think you need to get a grip.
All this stuff about 'for security' etc.. - get real.
It is expected that you hand the ID over, not only to check the detail, look at photo etc.. but to also make sure it is genuine and not fake.
If I was serving and you refused to hand it over then you would have a choice of handing it over or be refused the sale.
I don't serve that many but to be fair, people like you are pretty rare thankfully.
It's hard enough for till staff being at risk of disciplinary action everytime they serve for failing an internal test purchase and likely dismissal for an externail fail - arkward people like you just make the job even harder.
But that's your company's policy, I dont wor for the company. So I do what I feel is best for me. I'm not here to serve other's, if I feel that my ID, and my personl data, is safer in my hands, that's what i shall do.0 -
in all my years in retail and hospitality I have never come across this! I thought I had 'seen it all'! tbh hun if you had refused to relinquish the card you wouldn't have got your purchase! its not just the written data - its the actual feel of the card. especially in a pub or club you get a lot of fake IDs and the best way to tell is often the feel of it - fake ids don't feel right!0

I don't mind them 'feeling' the id, just not to actually hand it over.0 -

it made a difference to ME - Trading Standards use all sorts of tricks and if I had been found serving underage using false ID - I would be PERSONALLY liable! They take no prisoners do TS! break the law and NO excuse is accepted! even - 'well they had ID'!
edit - oops that made me sound like I disagree with you Kayalana - I was just trying to reinforce that its not personal but the employee HAS to ensure the ID isn't faked!0 -
My eyes aren't what they used to be and with my varifocal glasses, I have get things at the right distance and right angle to read them.
I'd have to grab the OP's hand and move it around until I could read the ID!
Would probably be embarrassing for both of us!Early retired - 18th December 2014

Or you could say, i'm sorry i cant read that, may i take a closer look? Its all about manners. Snatching it out of my hand is the problem i was raising, which is unnacceptable. Asking to see it, politely, not a problem0 -

Totally agree, and if I encountered someone being cagey about their ID, I'd wonder what they were trying to hide.
When I worked in retail selling computer games, we had to be so careful, if we sold an 18 rated game to someone underage, we were looking at a possible jail sentence and a £5000 fine.0
