A question about ID (as in proof of age)
I'm 27, but i keep getting id'd, which I have absolutely no problem with. It's a compliment.
What i do have a slight problem with is handing over my ID to people, so as a rule I show them the ID, and if the reach out for it, I simply keep hold of it.
I do this partly for security, as I dont want people to get my name, address and DOB, and partly on priciple, it's my ID afterall. (you may disagree with my principles and that's fine).
Now i will say I am reasonable and if the lighting isnt great or they cant read it clearly, and ask to take a closer look I generally do. But today a lady simply tried to snatch my ID out of my hand. Which I clearly said No to, I said please dont snatch my ID, you can see it clearly. She said sorry and approved my purchase, though went on to mumbe whatever.
I will stress I do this with anyone, including police. Now i know legally I am not obliged to hand over my ID, but wonder how others feel about this?

Dependant on the ID that you are using, people may be asking to take a closer look to check it isn't fake. If someone wishes to do this though they should ask you politely and not just try to snatch it from you. It is then your prerogative whether you agree to hand it over.
Oh to go back to the days when someone asked me for ID to prove my age. They are but a distant memory now :cool:The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.0 -
Each to their own, if that's what you are happy doing, then as you say it's yours so hold on to it.
I don't mind handing mine over in these sorts of circumstances. There's not a lot someone can do with name/address/DOB on their own anyway. Seems a tad paranoid to me not to even let them touch it IDing in a shop for purchases. How are they going to get your ID information to keep, which is what you are afraid of? If they can memorise it looking at it while holding it, they can memorise it looking at it with you holding it.
It's not like they can start writing it down or scanning it or anything. Handing it over in circumstances where they can walk off with it, I would be a bit more careful then.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.0 -
I think your way over thinking things.People don't know what they want until you show them.0

I always have problems when Im asked for ID, because I dont drive and therefore dont have a driving licence and the only photographic ID I have is my passport and Im not about to start carrying my passport around with me when Im in a supermarket trying to buy alcohol.
I went through a spell around 6 years ago when I was constantly being asked for ID, then it stopped and in the last 6 months Ive been asked for ID about half a dozen times.
Im 44, but I dont wear make up, wear casual clothes a lot and usually have my hair tied back in a ponytail and Ive always looked younger than I am.
So Im afraid for me really, no ID, no booze and I dont see the point in applying for an alternative form of ID at my advanced age when Ive been drinking in pubs for over 25 years.
Wouldnt bother me handing ID over to a cashier or similar if they asked for it.0 -
If you hand it over to a cashier you would easily be able to tell if they wrote down your details! They can't really be expected to memorise them to use them for any fraudulent purpose, can they?
They would possibly need to hold it in order to check the holograms on a PASS card, I know I used to, but mostly they will be checking the date of birth, calculating whether you're old enough to buy your air freshener/ paracetomol/ fireworks/ whatever, and making sure that the ID looks genuine.
As Kayalana puts is, you are over thinking this. They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.

Thanks everyone, i don't mind them touching it to adjust to their eye level, just dont like relinquishing it. But glad i'm not basically being ridiculous with it

Like i say I don't mind if they ask, but snatching it I didnt appreciate!
It's more in small shops, or what i feel to be less trustworthy where a camera may be strategically positioned.0 -
Honestly, I would think there was something suspicious going on if someone held up the ID instead of handed it over to be looked at.
Aside from that, people read at a comfortable distance for themselves. You holding up a small driving license is just being plain awkward."On behalf of teachers, I'd like to dedicate this award to Michael Gove and I mean dedicate in the Anglo Saxon sense which means insert roughly into the anus of." My hero, Mr Steer.0 -

I guess you would refuse to serve me then, which is your perogative. I've not had many people complain though, and 99% were polite and asked to take a closer look.
Your entitled to your opinion ofcourse0 -
To be honest.. if you held it out to me I would assume you were doing exactly that... and I'd reach to take it from you to look at it properly... inspecting the ID close up is reasonable behaviour on the part of the cashier... refusing to permit that is not... you seem super sensitive about the whole thing... are you sure she 'snatched' and didn't just reach up in a hurry after you held it out to her?
If you were dictating the distance and angle I was viewing the ID at I would consider you were being at best, a bit odd, and at worse, actively trying to defraud us with fake ID.
If I asked you to hand it to me so I could look better and you refused, I would exercise my right not to serve you because I could lose my job if the ID was fake!0 -
The writing on a driving license is small so of course they are likely to hold it. I think you are being paranoid.0
