Just find it strange tht so many people must hold someone else's ID to be satisfied. I bet no-one has received proper training on spotting a fake ID.

Much like no-one here is likely to have ever seen all foreign passports, but yet those are legitimate id's.

Dont think its cagey to hold on to my property, i dont know who you are, or where your hands have been for that matter.

I promise I always wash my hands when I've been to the little girls room, and I don't pick my nose either! :D

I've had my hands on plenty of driving licences, passports etc in my 16 years of processing credit agreements. The customers just handed me them to get the driver/passport number off....I don't think I can remember anyone not wanting to hand one over?

Not suggesting you personally, more a general statement. :)

    Fir enough, 2 questions:

1: in those 16 years (which is a wealth of experience i concede), can you say you could identify a fake Iraqi passport, if you held one? Or a Russian one? Or South African? - you get what i mean. A driving licence, possibly, most people have one, or atleast a provisional, but

2: In those 16 years, where you have access to alot of personal data, did you ever need to take copies of these documents, or have the opportunity to?

My point is, everyday, the general public is liberal with personal information, make it easy to be a target. But my security concerns are just lauhed off. I dont mind, im conscious of personal data, my bank has 3 times stopped attempted fraud, and im careful with data. Countless people arent as lucky. And sure there are absolutely times when you must show ID, but this is just one point on a large string.

It had to be a UK passport, so you're right, I wouldn't know if it was a fake Iraqi passport or not because I've never seen one, and we couldn't have accepted it anyhow.

We never took copies of those documents no. On very very rare occasions, and I mean very rarely, we sometimes had to fax across a copy of a document to the credit company, but if we did, the customer was more than welcome to come with us to the fax machine if they so wanted.

So are you saying that if someone asks to see your ID, you show it to them but still hold onto it, they are then likely to ask for it again as they probably wont be able to read the details or want to check it feels right, you just push it further towards them?

This would likely then make them think you you are either a) a weirdo/using someone elses or something or b) using fake ID, and make them want to further inspect it either way!

Just give them the ID and get over yourself.

    That's a bet you'd lose then :D

Are you really forty four? You sound much younger . Most people by the time they've reached your age have developed enough maturity to realize how ID works and not to make people whose job it is to check more difficult.

Would def add this guy to my complete nutter list though. Would rather not serve you altogether let alone alchol

Personally I don't think this comment is necessary. The OP never refuses to show ID. He has also said that if someone asked politely to take a closer inspection he would co-operate. The only thing he has a slight issue with is handing the ID over, which he doesn't have to do. None of this makes him a nutter. Perhaps he has had a nasty experience in the past whereby his personal details were obtained and used inappropriately, and this has led him to now be extra cautious.
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.

Part of my job is to advise retailers that sell age-restricted products about what they should do to prevent underage sales - including age-verification policies and staff training on how to check ID. We tell retailers that the only effective way to check ID (and ensure it is genuine and not tampered) is to hold it yourself and carry out various checks on the security features that should be present.

We see a lot of tampered/fake ID which wouldn't be picked up if someone just held a card in front of your face but would be obvious if you held it and ran your hand over it, particularly on driver's licences which have tactile security features. Many retailers will also use a UV light to check security features that are built into passports/driver licences/PASS cards.

My advice to retailers is that if someone doesn't want you to hold the ID that may be because it is fake or has been tampered with so you should refuse the sale.

You have a right not to give them your ID to hold, but equally they have every right to refuse to serve you if you refuse.

TBH, I think it's paranoia to claim it's a security risk for a member of staff at a shop to hold your ID for a few seconds to carry out the appropriate checks. You're standing right there, what do you think they're going to do with it? In the highly unlikely situation that they start taking details down or doing something inappropriate then challenge them and get the ID back.
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!
