I always have problems when Im asked for ID, because I dont drive and therefore dont have a driving licence and the only photographic ID I have is my passport and Im not about to start carrying my passport around with me when Im in a supermarket trying to buy alcohol.

FYI you can get a provisional licence fairly cheaply, my friend carries one as she still gets ID'ed at 26 and doesn't drive.

To be honest.. if you held it out to me I would assume you were doing exactly that... and I'd reach to take it from you to look at it properly... inspecting the ID close up is reasonable behaviour on the part of the cashier... refusing to permit that is not... you seem super sensitive about the whole thing... are you sure she 'snatched' and didn't just reach up in a hurry after you held it out to her?

If you were dictating the distance and angle I was viewing the ID at I would consider you were being at best, a bit odd, and at worse, actively trying to defraud us with fake ID.

If I asked you to hand it to me so I could look better and you refused, I would exercise my right not to serve you because I could lose my job if the ID was fake!

Trust me i know the difference between someone taking a look and someone snatching it. And like I said if anyone asks to see it, I will happily let them. Just think it's polite to ask.

No offence, but you thinking I'm abit odd wouldn't bother me :) But you're absolutely right you could refuse to serve me, which obviously i wouldnt want, but it's all individual choice.

So I ask you for ID...you hold it where I can't see it properly...and I have to ask you AGAIN if I can see your ID ....

I would think YOU were rude tbh making me ask twice which is a perfectly reasonable request.
People don't know what they want until you show them.

And it shouldn't bother you but at the same time if you're going to behave in a way that is eliciting these responses, its helpful for you to know how and why your behaviour is being interpreted as it is by others :)
  • When I worked on a checkout we had it drummed into us to take the ID from the person and hold it ourselves whilst we looked at the DOB. This was just to check whether it felt different to a real one.

I know when I worked on a checkout I was just interested in the DOB and the photo. I certainly wasn't concerned with looking at the name, address etc and I bet my colleagues weren't either.

I do, absolutely. I know, having worked behind a bar, that the licencing regulations are very strict.

I guess sometimes my principles get in the way of an easy life :)

Perfect, a great example. Did you ever have someone refuse to hand over the ID? and did you refuse people on this basis?

    Just curious really.

Like I say, I've done this with Police before, and whilst they may not like hearing No, they dont really bother much. And knowing my Rights is important.

No I never once had anyone refuse to hand over their ID so I've never had to refuse to serve anyone for that reason. In fact the only person I've ever refused simply didn't have ID with them.

A question about ID (as in proof of age)

    I'm 27, but i keep getting id'd, which I have absolutely no problem with. It's a compliment.

What i do have a slight problem with is handing over my ID to people, so as a rule I show them the ID, and if the reach out for it, I simply keep hold of it.

I do this partly for security, as I dont want people to get my name, address and DOB, and partly on priciple, it's my ID afterall. (you may disagree with my principles and that's fine).

Now i will say I am reasonable and if the lighting isnt great or they cant read it clearly, and ask to take a closer look I generally do. But today a lady simply tried to snatch my ID out of my hand. Which I clearly said No to, I said please dont snatch my ID, you can see it clearly. She said sorry and approved my purchase, though went on to mumbe whatever.

I will stress I do this with anyone, including police. Now i know legally I am not obliged to hand over my ID, but wonder how others feel about this?

I think you need to get a grip.

All this stuff about 'for security' etc.. - get real.

It is expected that you hand the ID over, not only to check the detail, look at photo etc.. but to also make sure it is genuine and not fake.

If I was serving and you refused to hand it over then you would have a choice of handing it over or be refused the sale.

I don't serve that many but to be fair, people like you are pretty rare thankfully.

It's hard enough for till staff being at risk of disciplinary action everytime they serve for failing an internal test purchase and likely dismissal for an externail fail - arkward people like you just make the job even harder.

Ofc you wasn't....the guy is obvouisly complety paranoid or so up his own **** that he thinks people are going to take one look at him and start stalking him!!

I think you need help quite frankly....

And its not principle its being plain akward...if someone DID want your personal details they would ask to see your ID better then if they *could* memorise then....not handing your ID over unless they ask achives nothing if your just going to hand it over if they ask....its just making a fuss over nothing....I think another word is attention seeking.

Thanks for your opinion. Like I said everyone has one. It's my ID and my principles, and likewise I've never been refused. And if someone did ask to see it, I could judge whether to hand it over or not.
