We pay 50% of the household bills into an account each, which funds all the household bills and the joint credit card which we use for our food shops.

We both can lob something in the trolley we fancy; we both choose what we eat. We meal plan weekly so we know what we are having.

I pay for contact lens stuff separately, we pay for our own hobbies separately but food & drink is a part of US.

Separate food cupboards is the next logical step.
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

Personally I agree with you. Each to their own of course but surely some long term plan needs to be in place over finances, regarding what happens if they have a baby and take time away from a career. Or if one or other of them became ill or was made redundant.

There are some bloody weird people on MSE!

I can't make up my mind if this thread is serious or just a troll fest.

If you had a meat eater and a vegan or vegetarian living together which can happen, people would probably be buying their own meals. Or at least the bulk of their own meals.

I dont think its any different to one person earning more than another in a couple which might be the case for the OP and her partner anyway.

I really struggle to get my head around this...We are both late 40s and have both retired..What happens in later life when one gets a good pension and one gets no pension...Hard luck?

Also with separate finances it must be easier to hide debt from each other?

I would find it far too complicated to be keeping things separate, or working out what percentage each person contributed based on their income. Seems like a lot of hard work to me, when things could be simplified.

My ex and I earned a similar salary. Who earned the most switched between us at times, what with promotions or career changes etc. I really couldn't be bothered with constantly adjusting things to keep it all 'fair'. Far easier to pool everything together in my mind, on the understanding that what is in the pot is 'ours'. Each to their own though, what worked for me may well not work for other people.

I'm wondering how they would work out the individual wear and tear on the light bulbs or the carpets.

Pedometers and some clever algorithm based on weight, shoe size and distances travelled?

I'm a vegetarian and my husband eats meat. We still share the cost of our meals!

Each to their own, but IMO I would find it bizarre to split the cost of food like that, using an envelope system or whatever... a 60/40 split or similar is slightly easier to get my head around if one eats more expensive food but even so.

In fact when I lived with a friend, again she ate meat and I didn't, we still shared food, just took it in turns to pay for the shopping.
