Arnie, big hugs and I am so sorry for the loss of your Mum. I hope things work out for you and your hubby. X0

Arachne my husband is the most lovely generous sweet person you could meet. I love him dearly and he is a great dad to our toddler.
It's a sad fact of life that people who are known as generous or sweet tend to get taken advantage of by those they care about.urs sinserly,

still the fact is the social wont pay for the full cost. if they have no cash someone will have to.0

The hospital have already said they will sort out a very basic funeral.
O.P doesnt have to pay at all, its nothing to do with her. Its a distant relative of her husbands. Not even the Husbands Dad.
If the family cant afford what they want and the DSS wont pay the full amount, then the hospital will sort it out. If the family cant pay then they have to go with the provision available.0 -
a step dad is not distant. it depends on the situation but they could have been more.of a father than there natural one. its up to the family. but there is still a stigma to a paupers funeral. it maybe hidden behind nicer words but thats what it is.
its clear that the ops husband feels duty bound to help. that sound like the right thing. however that does not mean that he should be bailing out the others they should pay even on the dole they can find some money even if they have to borrow it from somewhere..0 -
Sounds like the answer is obvious: cut your husband loose, that way you'll be cutting the anchor that is his family loose as well. If you don't do this then you can't really complain.0

What I found very odd is the amount they wanted to borrow changed massively over the last few days. On Thursday it was 1400 on Saturday 600 and yesterday it was 300. Clearly they didn't get what they wanted so they came back with a lower offer
Just to clarify the deceased is not a stepdad. He is my half brother in laws dad, someone I only ever met twice and on both occasions he did not even acknowledge me he just mumbled swear words in front of my son (he was schizophrenic)
My half brother in law has still got his designer clothes and x box. Surely these should have gone down cash converters if he wanted this burial so much. Likewise his mum the ex wife of the deceased is giving nothing even though she can afford 40 fags a day and has a massive plasma screen tv which could have been pawned
What angers me the most is the emotional blackmail they have tried on with us. They told us that if we did not cough up the guys body would be chucked in the hospital incinerator without a funeral and there would be no ashes. A bit like when they burned all those cattle in the foot and mouth epidemic. I have phoned the bereavement specialist at the hospital who has said this is absolute rubbish and no one at the hospital would have said this
I do not even want to attend this blinking funeral now and want nothing more to do with them0
