Husband wants to loan step-brother 600. How to make sure we get it back?

Personally I disagree with this BIG TIME.

Background my 40 year old hubby has an 18 yr old half brother. I have been with hubby 4 years and we have only seen him a handful of times apart from when he asked for a job off me. I gave him a job and he lasted one week before he stopped turning up and did not bother to phone in and let me know. I went to his house and he was smoking pot with his mates and said he did not want to go to work as he had decided to decorate the house.

Hubby shares mum with this guy. My mum in law threw him out of the house at 15 due to truanting and bad behaviour to live with his dad. I think this was a disgraceful thing to do as dad was a severe and violent schizophrenic who could not even look after himself.

Anyway the dad died last week and the whole family are on benefits and cannot afford the funeral. Apparently they pay out and then the social foot some of the bill after they get the receipts. Some being the important word here

Husband has now said he will LOAN him 600. He says he will get it in writing he is to pay 20 back a week but this guy is ON JOBSEEKERS. So if he defaults and it goes to county court the court will make him pay it back at 1 pound a week ir something stupid.

I am gutted about this-especially as my mum died last week and none of the in laws even sent me a sympathy card.

How can we ensure we get anything back? I do not think there is anything we can do to make sure we get this cash back.

I AM DEVASTATED HE IS GIVING THIS CASH AWAY.

It's a case of either putting it down to experience, or drawing up a contract and then putting it down to experience.

I loaned my OH £150k last year, then another £40k etc etc etc. In the long term, they'll probably get written off (it was to buy a business, new car, etc etc etc), but there obviously is the agreement to repay at some point in the future there.

If the bank won't lend him the money, why would you? They would with my OH, but I had it there, so decided to do this for her.

You can't ensure you will get anything back - you can't get blood out of a stone.

If you took him to court then as you said, he'd probably be told to repay at a quid a week or something.

Your OH needs to understand that there is a 99% probability that if he lends the money he won't get it back.

I think the bigger problem is more with your husband going expressly against your wishes. It is unlikely he'll get any of the money back. Can you and he afford to lose £600?

Hubby should be standing in the corner wearing a pointy hat with a letter "D" on it. Someone who decides to stay home and get stoned instead of going to work isn't a viable candidate for lending money.

Anyway, as others have said, there is no way you can enforce repayment, short of threatening to break his legs, which is both illegal and a very nasty thing to do. Personally I think you should, in your mind, assume you'll never see the money again and then be pleasantly surprised if it gets repaid, then punish your husband for being so stupid as to lend £600 to someone who I wouldn't lend 50p to.

My husband got caught out in a PPI scam last month. These people phoned him-initially asking for the wrong person-then told him to buy £360 of ukash vouchers and then they would call at the house the next day with £3600. They then asked him the ukash voucher codes. He kept this all secret from me. The best bit HE HAD NEVER HAD A LOAN IN HIS LIFE AND HAD NEVER PURCHASED PPI!

So basically in the last 2 months your husband has stupidly given a grand away with no chance of giving it back - I think he needs to be told what that has cost him - no holiday this year, or new gadget (or whatever he likes to spend his money on).

Make him have a read of the sticky at the top of this forum https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/76953. Should open his eyes to the likelihood of getting his money back if he lends it.
